Job description

DepartmentEssex Law School, University of Essex Duties of the RoleThe Senior Research Officer will be a postdoctoral researcher on the three-year multidisciplinary project ‘Cumulative Civilian Harm in War: Addressing the Hidden Human Toll of the Law's Blind Spot’. This research project is designed to address the challenges in regulating and limiting cumulative harm to civilians during armed conflict. More information can be found here. The main task of the researcher is to provide research support on a postdoctoral level to further the project’s aims and goals. The candidate will mainly work on the analysis of data collected through population surveys in the UK, the US, Israel, Iraq, and potentially Gaza. This includes quantitative analysis of survey data and survey experiments, data visualisation, and statistical analysis in R. The aim of the surveys is twofold: The surveys in Iraq and Gaza are designed to better understand how conflict-affected populations view cumulative harm. The other aim is to better understand how populations on whose behalf militaries fight judge cumulative civilian harm that is caused by these military campaigns – i.e., the impact of civilian harm on public opinion “at home” in the UK, the US, and Israel. The researcher may also be required to conduct additional research subject to the candidate’s skills and project needs, potentially including conducting interviews and the participation in workshops with external stakeholders. The candidate may have opportunities to co-author with members of the research team subject to mutual interest and agreement. The postdoc will report directly to the Principal Investigator, and work closely with all project investigators, as well as liaising with collaborating experts and institutions from around the world. Skills and qualifications requiredIn order to be successful, the candidate will have a Ph.D., D.Phil, or equivalent doctoral degree in Political Science or another social science field. It is essential that the candidate has proficiency in quantitative analysis of survey data and survey experiments, data visualisation, and statistical analysis in R. Experience working in interdisciplinary research teams and/or other relevant professional experience is desired.
