UKCEH is looking for two experienced Senior Research Software Engineers (RSEs) to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges. These RSE posts are advertised alongside four RSEs, all together forming a new RSE cohort of six individuals that will work closely together

Join us as a Senior Research Software Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in advancing our research and software development contributing to the overarching software architecture and digital strategy. You will be at the forefront of advancing environmental science, providing support for intricate environmental modeling, and founding an environmental RSE community throughout UKCEH to spearhead innovative research in the field.
You’ll contribute to diverse projects in monitoring systems, data processing, analysis platforms, visulisations, and tools for environmental science research. You’ll also oversee initiatives to improve Software Engineering practices across the organisation in collaboration with training teams.
We are looking for candidates with robust Software Engineering skills within a research setting and expertise in cloud computing. Ideal candidates will possess additional specialisation in the following areas; parallel and distributed computing, systems integration and interoperability, visualisation, human aspects of Software Engineering, IoT systems or machine learning and AI.

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Innovating the overarching software and system architecture for UKCEH, supporting current and future digital research infrastructure projects and aligning with the UKCEH’s digital strategy.
  • Leading open-source software products and initiatives within and across UKCEH and with the wider RSE community.
  • Researching emerging software technologies and design practices for sustainable and accessible digital solutions to support integrative environmental science.
  • Collaborating with expanding multidisciplinary teams across UKCEH, including the Environmental Data Science group that draw on co-design approaches to digital research infrastructure as well as promote best practices around agile software development and DevOps.
  • Employing and promoting contemporary Software Engineering practices to build technology-agnostic robust systems and tools for environmental science.
  • Identifying and initiating future collaborative opportunities across UKRI and elsewhere around the development of digital research infrastructure.
  • Presenting and disseminating innovative solutions to the wider community through high quality publications and talks and with the public through impactful engagement events.
For the role of Senior Research Software Engineer, we’re looking for somebody who:
  • Has a degree in an appropriate subject (e.g., Software Engineering, Computer Science), and a PhD or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Has knowledge and experience of designing and developing cloud-based systems, with knowledge of cloud-native approaches.
  • Has experience of working within a research-driven environment.
  • Leads and engages others within their field and takes ideas forward.
  • Is proficient in one or more programming languages such as Python, R, Java, and C++, and an ability to develop skills in additional languages.
  • Has experience of working from stakeholder requirements to usable systems that meet the needs of potential diverse user groups.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of the cutting-edge developments in the principles and practices of Software Engineering.
  • Can apply such principles/practices to develop potentially innovative software solutions that are maintainable, scalable, reliable and extensible.
  • Can present work clearly and expertly to a variety of audiences including non-specialists, and actively pursues opportunities to collaborate with others.
