Job description

This role offers a competitive salary, hybrid working, 28 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays and 6% pension.

Salary £37,000-£42,000 per annum

About the role

Do you have a nose for a story, top-notch research and writing skills and the desire to make a difference in consumers' lives?

As a Senior Researcher/Writer you'll be investigating and writing content for Which? magazine, our website and other channels.

You will be working with colleagues across Which? including our advocacy, press and external affairs teams, to hold companies to account.

You'll also work closely with external partners including Ofcom and the CMA, as well as retailers and online platforms.

We'll want you to use a range of methods to research, and uncover, key issues facing consumers when shopping. This role will cover consumer issues such as the cost of groceries, dodgy pricing, working on our retail surveys and shopping on online marketplaces.

The quality of your investigative research and analysis will play a vital role in upholding our well-deserved reputation for fairness, thoroughness and reliability. This is primarily a desk-based role, but you will be required to use your networking skills to build external relationships with key contacts, and your varied approaches to investigative research may take you out-and-about to experience issues through the eyes of the consumer.

This secondment starts mid March.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and manage a wide range of projects with stakeholders across the organisation with minimal supervision
  • Design and deliver high quality, fit-for-purpose research, in line with team objectives, putting members and consumers at the heart
  • Produce well-written and consumer-focused content/outputs across a range of channels, as required
  • To ensure our online content achieves its performance goals in SEO and conversion
  • To develop and maintain strong subject expertise, sharing knowledge with colleagues throughout the organisation.

About you:

You need to have a track record in research and great writing skills, with understanding of writing for a consumer audience.  Ideally you would have experience of writing about retail and online marketplaces, but more important than that is a strong interest in the topic.

We'd like you to have:

  • Experience of managing multiple short and long term projects effectively
  • Strong analytical and primary research skills and good attention to detail
  • Proven writing skills with the ability to write for a consumer audience
  • Ideas on how to translate the issues around retail into investigative work for Which?
  • Great communication skills, the ability to work effectively as part of a team, and build strong relationships.

We also have these benefits for you to consider:

  • 35 hour working week
  • Generous 28 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays
  • Award winning pension scheme – when you pay in 3%, Which? pays in 6% (rising to 11% after one year of service.)
  • Discount site Sodexo which offers large %% off every day shopping
  • Annual Bonus (depending on employee and company performance)
  • Healthcare insurance & Private medical insurance and opportunity to participate in Vitality rewards programme (at 6 months)
  • A discretionary death in service benefit provision equivalent to six times your annual salary
  • Free access to Which? member content and free access to Which? money and legal helplines
  • Work from (almost) anywhere” for 4 weeks of the year policy

Our interview process usually involves 2 stages:

  • Sometimes a chat with a recruiter or hiring manager by phone (typically 30 minutes), followed by
  • An interview on Google Meet (approximately 45-90 minutes) consisting of values and experience-based competency questions and a role related task on a laptop
