The role includes oversight of all aspects of the work of the technician team in order to ensure science practical work is effective, safe and efficiently provided. Sir Jonathan North Girls' College is an outstanding secondary school in Leicester which is constantly growing and looking to improve. Our Science Faculty is highly successful and has a strong focus on practical work and skills within lessons. The successful applicant will have experience of preparation of laboratory areas, technical procedures and maintaining supplies/equipment. Please read through the attached information to gain an overview of the benefits of working in our warm, welcoming and supportive college.Main tasks and responsibilitiesLine management and supervision of Science Technicians.
Plan and prioritise own work within established routines, referring only complex issues to the Curriculum Team Leader.From timetables and/or teachers’ instructions, identify and ensure availability of all materials, equipment and apparatus that are required for demonstration lessons and students’ practical work.Ensure that teaching staff are able to deliver planned practical lessons safely therefore maximise lesson time contact with students so that students can maximise the use of lesson time.Assist teaching staff (and trainee teachers) in the classroom by overseeing and/or assisting students doing practical work, to enable students to maximise their use of available lesson time.Obtain specimens for experiments in lessons and during practical lessons.
Undertake work required ‘on time’.
Ensure that all equipment and apparatus is fully functional and to ensure that adequate stocks are maintained of all resources required by the Curriculum Team within the confines of the budget, as discussed with the Curriculum Team Leader.Undertake repairs and maintenance of equipment to maximise its usage and minimise need for replacement thereby providing cost effective support.Undertake safety checks as required and comply with the requirements of Health and Safety, COSHH and other relevant legislation and school documentation, carrying out risk assessments.Provide advice as necessary on Health & Safety issues to staff and students, alerting staff as necessary to any ‘unsafe’ practices by students, to reduce the possibility of accidents.Develop and organise resources (anticipating problems and changes where possible) in conjunction with members of the Curriculum Team.Ensure all practical lessons have been suitably cleared up leaving facilities usable for the next user.Be responsible for the security of the practical equipment and to store away any apparatus and resources used according to the College Health and Safety policy.Attend training sessions as required.
Carry out other duties of student support and administrative support or accompanying teaching staff and students on an educational visit, as may reasonably be requested by the Curriculum Team Leader.Liaise where appropriate with teaching staff, other support staff and outside suppliers.
Be aware that all staff are responsible for the safeguarding and promoting of the welfare of children.Act as a first aider as required (if qualified. Training can be provided).
Be available to assist in exam invigilation where required.
