Senior Scientist PAT 

Location - Macclesfield, UK


Are you an experienced Process Analytical Technology (PAT) Scientist looking for a new challenge? We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Chemical Development team, part of Pharmaceutical Technology & Development, based at Macclesfield, Cheshire. As a Senior Scientist, you will be responsible for leading the use of PAT across AstraZeneca projects, mentoring less experienced scientists and ensuring the robustness, consistency and commercial viability of our processes.


In this role, you will work across early and late stage Chemical Development activities and support commercial products. You will collaborate within multiskilled groups including analytical, chemistry, kinetics, crystallisation, engineering, flow chemistry and new drug modalities. Your responsibilities will include leading PAT solutions to complex drug substance projects, providing expert challenge to drug substance projects, delivering regulatory submissions and contributing to the development of Chemical Development to support AstraZeneca’s current and future portfolio.

Essential Skills/Experience:
- BSc/PhD level education in a relevant discipline with experience working within a Research & Development and/or Manufacturing environment
- A strong understanding and proven track record of the development and delivery of drug substance control strategies using PAT
- Significant practical experience and expertise in the major PAT spectroscopic techniques
- A strong data centric mindset with proven ability in the area of Chemometrics
- A thorough understanding of the principles and management of SHE and cGMP

Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Experience in building quantitative models for use in real time PAT monitoring of drug substance unit operations
- Strong skills in utilising in-line PAT for crystallisation development
- Experience of technical supervision, coaching and mentoring
- Strong coding skills preferably in Matlab or Python
- Experience in utilising PAT at scale in clinical or commercial manufacture
