Job description

Consultant - Senior Service Designer

Location: Bristol

Salary: up to £85,000 + Benefits + Clearance bonus

Clearance: Applicants must currently hold the highest level of UK Government security clearance DV (MoD/UKSV, West)

The opportunity

Service designers are strategic thinkers with a keen appreciation for the power of human centred design. We play a critical role in reshaping our client’s businesses, by critically investigating all aspects of a challenge, reimagining the user experience for multiple user groups, and developing blueprints that articulate how these experiences will be delivered and fulfilled by the entire organisation - people, process and technology.

As a Senior Service Designer, you will be responsible for understanding the holistic service experience we are trying to create and working out how to bring each individual element of an organisation together in order to make it real. This will involve balancing the potentially competing demands of user experience and operational efficiency; strategic vision and commercial reality. During both design and delivery, you will also work with specialists from across our design practice - Strategists, Researchers, UX Designers, Visual Designers and more.

Your role will include:

  • Scoping and planning Service Design projects, with the support and review of your team lead
  • Leading research and design activities across the design process, including:
    • Qualitative and quantitative user research
    • Gathering and analysing relevant operational data
    • Developing archetypes, journey maps and service blueprints
    • Running codesign sessions with users to develop solution
    • Creating low fidelity prototypes to test service concepts for a variety of digital and non-digital touchpoints, and gathering feedback
  • Thinking strategically, to assess how service concepts meet strategic / commercial / policy goals, and fit within relevant constraints
  • Considering accessibility and ethical factors throughout research and design
  • Advocating for design-led service transformation, and the design process
  • Actively building professional relationships with colleagues and clients to increase your network and broaden your knowledge base within design
  • Supporting the Service Design team, and the wider XD Studio, in the creation of client-ready presentations and proposals to secure new work
  • Actively contributing to the wider XD studio, by participating and leading community events and activities outside of project work
  • Contributing to the development of our XD Studio’s design methods and tools
  • Working in diverse teams with an inclusive team culture where people are recognized for their contribution.

Skills and Professional experience

All applicants must hold a DV (Developed Vetting) clearance to apply. .

Overall, you’re an ideas person and problem solver as well as a hands-on doer - that’s important. We know it takes a mix of people to do amazing work, so you’ll love collaborating with and learning from people with different skills, backgrounds and perspectives. If you have an interesting or unusual mix of skills yourself, even better. You’ll be an ace at what you do, with a passion for digital, keen business instincts and an eye for emerging trends and behaviours.

Essential:

  • Experience applying a range of design skillsets (research, ideation, prototyping) at the level of an end-to-end service and experience
  • An interest in the Defence and Security sector within Government
  • The ability to understand and articulate how an end-to-end user experience is supported and enabled by people, process, and technology
  • A passion for learning about the world, human behaviour, and the motivations that lie beneath the surface
  • The practised ability to tie observations from research to recommendations and actions
  • Comfort with ambiguity and experimentation
  • The ability to work in dynamic conditions, and transition quickly between collaborative and individual work
  • Strong planning, organisation and documentation skills
  • An interest in multiple design disciplines and approaches, and the ability to quickly dive into a new domain or process
  • A collaborative nature, drawing motivation from effective teamwork

Desirable:

  • A varied background in one or more areas such as strategy, user research, business analysis, visual design, creative or front-end development
  • Experience of successful client delivery and engagement
  • Strong conceptual and information design skills
  • Experience in designing, leading and facilitating workshops or co-creation sessions
  • An understanding of the political, commercial and technology challenges faced by the Central Government and Defence & Security sector, and how digital technologies and delivery approaches can help solve them
