Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.

  • Thinking about a new role?
  • Do you want to use SQL, automated deployment and cloud-based technologies to make public service better?
  • Want to work in agile environment, in an organisation driven by continuous learning and continuous improvement?

We're looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join our amazing DWP Digital community.

DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

Our DWP Digital teams are driving a once-in-a-generation transformation of government services, using fresh ideas and leading-edge technologies to create innovative, scalable and user-centric digital solutions.

You'll help change the face of public services used by nearly every person in the UK. The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

Database. Work. Platforms.

You'll join a motivated team of Database Specialists and Engineers. We make sure DWP services are designed, delivered into production and maintained.

Our team purpose is to provide a great service, while improving how we work and helping our people grow their skills.

Our business driver is to move towards cloud-based technologies from on-premise hosting.

Automation is our first preference, to give us more time to innovate and find new solutions.

Tell me more

It's collaborative role on an agile team. You work with others to make our Vision, Mission Statement and Business Plans come to life, doing work which advances our Data Platforms products.

You'll develop and maintain a deep and well-rounded knowledge of database technologies and the methods of building and managing them.

You'll need an open, innovative, and curious mindset - understanding what we do and how that interacts with the rest of the department.

What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?

  • Database technologies (particularly SQL Server)
  • Knowledge of public cloud technologies (particularly Azure)
  • Skills in developing Infrastructure as Code (particularly Ansible, Terraform and Git)
  • Testing and assuring code as an integral part of the development lifecycle
  • Experience in agile ways of working

It would be beneficial but not essential to have some knowledge of scripting technologies (particularly PowerShell and Python) when starting the role.

Details. Wages. Perks.

You'll join us in one of our brilliant digital hubs in Blackpool or Newcastle, whichever is most convenient for you.

We also have all the tools and tech we need to enable our people to work and collaborate flexibly. We work a hybrid model, with some time at home and some time in a hub with the team.

We offer competitive pay of up to £73,153.

You'll be eligible for a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth 27.9% - that's up to £17,721 a year.

You'll get a generous leave package starting at 26 days, plus all the usual bank holidays, and the option to take extra days off on flexi leave.

We also have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:

  • Flexible working, flexi hours and flexi days
  • Hybrid working: some time in a hub with the team, some time at home
  • Family-friendly policies
  • Time off volunteering and charitable giving
  • Bring your authentic self to work with 'I Can Be Me in DWP'
  • Discounts and savings on shopping, fun days out and more
  • Interest-free loans to buy a bike or a season ticket, so it's even easier for you to get to work and start making a difference
  • Working in an award-winning environment and culture
  • Professional development, coaching, mentoring and career progression opportunities.
