Job description

General Critical Care in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary are currently in a position to recruit into Band 6 vacancies.  Full time and part time hours are available.

We have fantastic opportunities for experienced Registered Nurses to join our highly dynamic, specialist unit and work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality Critical Care nursing.

Applicants should demonstrate excellent core values, a strong sense of team spirit, personal motivation and a commitment to lifelong learning.  Currently we are looking for nurses with previous experience in Critical Care with a completed Critical Care qualification or equivalent relevant experience.
The General Critical Care Unit has 28 funded beds across 2 areas within the hospital. Patients admitted require either level 2 or level 3 care for a broad spectrum of critical illnesses.

Working in Aberdeen’s General Critical Care Unit affords the opportunity to train and work in the Hyperbaric Chamber, which is the only category 1 Hyperbaric Chamber in Scotland.   We provide an elective service for a variety of conditions and a 24 hour emergency service to treat divers suffering from decompression illness.

In 2018, Aberdeen became the first Major Trauma Centre in Scotland and now plays a key role in leading the delivery of specialist trauma care.  The North of Scotland Major Trauma Centre, based in Aberdeen, is one of the largest health campuses in Europe and is now part of an inclusive and collaborative Trauma Network.

Additionally, in 2020, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary General Critical Care unit was commissioned as the only Scottish ECMO centre.  The ECMO service is delivered by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of expert staff who have continued to develop the service.  Aberdeen has a platinum award for ECMO service delivery, one of only 20 centres around the world to achieve this.

Successful candidates to the Senior Staff Nurse band 6 post, will be supported to achieve their ECMO Specialist qualification.  All Critical Care staff are expected to contribute to the extensive work being done locally around various Quality Improvement projects.

Informal visits to the unit are available – this will give you a valuable insight into the scope and practice of Critical Care and an opportunity to ask questions before you apply.  To arrange a visit, or get further information please contact the SCN in charge on 01224 553022.

An attractive relocation allowance of up to £8,000 is available to successful candidates.

Interviews will be held on 24 July 2024.
