ES&O Hardware Engineering team in Energy Storage & Optimization Business Unit is looking for Senior System Engineer. This position reports to the Senior System Development Manager. Location(s) for this position is anywhere in Canada eastern time Zone (preferably Toronto area), with monthly potential visits to the US office in Herndon, Virginia. Working remotely will also be an option for this position.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical guidance and act as subject matter expert in topics related to battery energy storage system, that to include Li-ion Battery systems architecture, AC and DC electrical design up to 1500V, Battery Management System (BMS) including HW, electronics, and SW, Module design, Lithium-Ion battery, fire safety and enclosure design.
  • Lead the development of the current  and next energy storage product.
  • Evaluate product design and configuration for compliance to relevant industry standards focusing on UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 855, IEC62933, UL1741, UL1973, IEC61508 and IEEE1574.
  • Ensure collaboration between different functions within the organization to achieve project goal, that to include mechanical, Electrical, Software, verification and testing and manufacturing.
  • Act as technical Lead for the engineers assigned to the project. The engineers will be from different functions.  
  • Should have full understanding of how different energy storage system components interact, and be able to define tasks needed to implement a change on any of the components.
  • Support resolving critical site issues coming, that to include electrical, mechanical and BMS issues.
  • Support Engineering Change Management (ECO) process, by approving, rejecting change requests and define tasks needed to implement the changes.
  • Support project managers through the gate review process.
  • Act as the technical go to person for the project managers.
  • Define tasks need to complete New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and technical direction to assigned personnel.
  • Work towards continuous process improvements, especially with respect to achieving product functional requirement and process effectiveness.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analyses (RCA) of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate design changes.
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for the product development programs.

 

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • BS EE degree required; graduate degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of electrical engineering experience focusing on designing and testing power systems, control panels, battery modules, and Battery Management System (BMS) preferably in the Battery Energy Storage industry.
  • 5+ years of product development and systems engineering, preferably in the Battery Energy Storage industry
  • 5+ experience leading design engineering team
  • Ability to provide guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/ skill areas.
  • Able to design, configure and validate Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), that to include component selection, define system architect, site layout, functional safety analyses, auxiliary load estimation, HVAC sizing, and battery sizing/configuration.
  • Working knowledge of industrial control philosophies, and communication protocols
  • Basic knowledge in AutoCAD Electrical, CAMEO and inventor is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of good documentation practices.
  • Ability to work with global team from different backgrounds and on different time zones.
  • Problem solving and innovative mindset.
  • Flexible and willing to adapt and learn.
  • Excellent written and verbal English and interpersonal skills.
  • Team player attitude.
  • Willing to travel 20% of the time.
