Job description

Technical Support To be a leading Systems Engineer in support of the UHP computer server systems infrastructure operational functions, including: Microsoft Active Directory (inc. DNS, Group Policy, and Authentication) Windows Server platforms inc. MS SQL Server Windows and SQL failover clustering (including SQL Availability Groups) VMware and/or Nutanix AHV Dell PowerScale (Isilon) and File Sharing WSUS / Ivanti Security Controls Linux and Unix operating systems Citrix and Windows Terminal Servers CommVault backups Server Hardware Web Servers (IIS/Apache) Automation (Administrative scripting languages e.g PowerShell) Microsoft Office 365 Extensive knowledge of system technologies, concepts, tools and practices, such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, S/FTP. To assist in managing the Trusts Computer Rooms including: Access / Security / Tidiness Environment issues heat and power usage Planned Power shutdowns Disposal of redundant equipment Work with the Advanced Operations engineers to analyse, investigate, and resolve highly complex queries, problems and users requirements of the computer server system infrastructure, liaising with the Systems Operations, Networks,and Software Development professionals where necessary. To introduce, adapt, test, improve, repair and maintain the computer server system infrastructure equipment ensuring that equipment operating system and software/firmware are at the correct revision level, completing Change Management Requests where necessary. Assisting system suppliers with operating system, database, and application upgrades. To configure both the hardware and software of expensive computer server system infrastructure equipment, ensuring appropriate access control and management of the secure server systems. To ensure the maximum availability of the computer server system infrastructure including Disaster Recovery planning and implementation involving out of hours work where necessary. To input and manipulate data to the computer server system infrastructure equipment and the IT databases. To input and manipulate data to, and create reports from, various server system analysis tools including the production of system downtime reports. To provide specialist advice, implement, enforce, monitor, report incidents and assist the investigation into breaches of the IT security policies, ensuring safe and appropriate use of computer server system resources. To develop new, propose changes to, and redesign the teams working practices, procedures and IT databases ensuring a quality first approach. Implements D&I policies for own area, proposes changes to D&I user working practices and procedures e.g. when planning for new projects, changes in legislation, new reporting processes, new training programmes impacting across the organisation(s). Plans projects which impact across the department & organisation, delivery of D&I services for own area; contributes to medium term D&I strategy. To ensure computer server anti-virus software and patching is up to date. Monitor backups and undertake the restore of user files and computer server systems. Assist in the management of the server estates licensing position and of certificate renewals. Assist in the management of the server estates compute and storage capacity management. Planning Support To Lead on and have oversight of multiple concurrent workstreams, assessing risk and impact as well as resources required. Contribute to reports and offer insights to support strategy and management of the server environment and the resources contained within. To input into Disaster Recovery planning and implementation, involving out of hours work where necessary, and act as the Systems Operations technical lead during system outages. Works to achieve agreed objectives and given deadlines. Has given freedom to do this in own way working within broad professional and ITIL based policies and processes. Human Resources To assist the training and development of new starters and junior Systems Operations engineers. To attending meetings and represent the interests of the Systems Infrastructure Team. Strategy Assist the Chief Technology Officer, Head of Technical Services, and the Systems management in the development of the IT Infrastructure strategy for the Plymouth Health Community, including the testing of new technologies. Assist in the management and procurement of licences and certificate renewals. Represent the interests of the Systems Operations Team at all levels and with all stakeholders in the strategy planning and making recommendations. COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS To communicate highly complex multi-stranded IT infrastructure issues to: D&I Managers Users - covers all Health Community staff and the general public Various staff in other NHS organisations: General Practitioners, Strategic Health Authority and other health organisations in South & West Devon Commercial IT server system Consultants, Suppliers, Installation and Maintenance Engineers. OTHER This post is part of the IT Systems Operations On-Call Rota which provides critical computer system infrastructure support out of business hours. The post holder is expected to work beyond normal worked hours to resolve any critical failures of the Plymouth Health Communities telephone and computer infrastructure. Upgrades often require working outside of normal working hours. A hybrid approach to working is currently being employed in D&I, primarily homeworking for the Systems Infrastructure Team. ***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as Priority and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
