Job description

The Tree team are responsible for the inspection and routine maintenance of the Boroughs trees across Swindon which is set to increase 30% over the next five years as the Council delivers ambitious expansion plans, which are required to facilitate the growth and regeneration of Swindon. This provides homes, jobs, recreational opportunities and a high-quality environment for residents, visitors and employers alike.

Your next role

As a Skilled Tree Surgeon, you will be required to carry out all types of maintenance work associated with trees, including works in Parks, woodlands, shelter belts and along roads and paths.  You will also carry out planting and staking, tree felling, dismantling using lowering techniques, including using ropes, winches, slings and shackles. You should be prepared to work in all weathers, and may be asked to take part in an out of hour’s standby Rota attending emergency situations to assess and repair.

Ideally, you will have a good knowledge and experience in arboriculture work, including the ability to identify tree species and working at heights to 140ft. 

A full UK Driving licence is essential.

You most hold all current Chainsaw Operator’s qualifications below:

  • NPTC - CS -30 31 Chainsaw maintenance and Cross cutting
  • NPTC - CS -32 Felling and procession trees
  • NPTC - CS -38 using a chainsaw from a rope and harness
  • NPTC - CS -39 accessing a tree from rope and harness including aerial rescue

You must have good knowledge and understanding of risk assessments and safe systems or working

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
