Job description

About The Role

Everyone says it, but Ecotricity is genuinely a bit special, we have a dynamic culture, remarkable people, and an authentic vision to change the world, and that’s not something many companies can say.

To advance our delivery of the next generation of customer-facing tools, we’re looking for an equally special Software Development Manager. This person will lead four talented teams covering the development of our Data, CRM, Billing, and Full Stack platforms.

The right candidate will be committed to developing and nurturing our people, evolving our processes, and engaging with our stakeholders alongside our product team.

Whilst this role has scope for hybrid (50/50), and most of us take advantage of that, you’ll probably be a person who sees value in face-to-face interaction and will appreciate that we have a great office in Stroud with free onsite parking and a train station two minutes away.

Crucially, you will be adept at delivering software changes and speaking the language of our top-notch engineers. You likely have a background in building systems yourself, but now, your ability to both lead and engage in peer-level discussions, helping architect and design our future, is what counts most.

Key Responsibility Areas

Leadership and Development Management:

  • Lead by example, using your experience to bring ideas that inspire and motivate our teams.
  • Foster an environment of innovation by actively involving yourself in development projects.
  • Mentor team members passionately, prioritising continuous learning and professional development.

Project and Delivery Management:

  • Collaborate closely with internal teams and product owners to ensure timely and specification-compliant project deliveries.
  • Drive the execution of large-scale transformative projects such as the Salesforce E&U initiative and our comprehensive data strategy refresh.
  • Manage the engineering team’s delivery of agile projects, balancing the need for flexibility with stakeholder expectations for clear outcomes, deadlines and ROI.
  • Commit to keeping our platforms at the forefront of technology through strategic updates and consistent maintenance.

Technical Excellence and Innovation:

  • Stay informed about the latest trends in Software Development and advocate for the adoption of technologies that align with our environmental goals.
  • Cultivate a culture where technological advancement and the sharing of ideas, across all levels, is routine.
  • Enhance our project delivery strategies, ensuring our teams have healthy processes that support them and lead to high quality and velocity.
  • Maintain rigorous security standards to ensure our systems are robust and recover quickly from any disruptions.

Consultancy and Business Alignment:

  • Be a visible part of the technology team, providing expert advice and strategic insights during the formation of projects and their subsequent delivery.
  • Work to ensure the culture of Ecotricity, where Technology and the other departments are peers working for a shared goal, is championed and grown in every interaction.

Performance Indicators:

  • Consistent on-time delivery of projects that fully meet planned specifications.
  • Observable enhancements in team dynamics, efficiency, and technical capability.
  • Significant technological advancements and updates across key platforms.
  • Robust security measures and ability to respond swiftly to cyber incidents.
  • Clear communication of project statuses to senior management.
  • Effective management of project controls and timely escalation of issues.

Key Relationships:

  • Director of Technology
  • C-Suite and Non-Board Directors
  • Peers within the Technology Team
  • Product Owners
  • Head of Project Delivery
  • QA Lead

About You
  • Demonstrated expertise within the last five years in one or more of the following areas: Web development (NodeJS, React, Angular), Salesforce, Databricks, AWS, energy billing systems, or similar platforms.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, thriving in a dynamic and demanding development setting.
  • A solid grasp of agile methodologies with a track record of successful project completions.
  • High emotional intelligence with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.

Flexibility statement

The fast moving nature of the company's business means that from time to time you may be asked to perform duties or tasks outside of your original job description on an ad hoc basis. This allows the company to use it's people in the best possible way at all times and helps the employees to make make their contribution in a changing environment.

Ecotricity is Britain's greenest energy company. When we started back in 1995, we were the first company in the world to provide a new kind of electricity- the green kind.

Our mission was, and remains, to change the way energy is made and used in Britain- by replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy.

We don't just supply green energy, we use the money from our customers' bills to make it ourselves too- we build windmills and sun parks in Britain. We call this 'bills in to mills'. In 2021, we started work on building two new solar parks, and now, in 2024, we're bringing geothermal energy to our customers' fuel mix, a first in the UK. We're also developing green gas mills which will generate 100% green gas from a source that we will never run out of- grass.

We don't just focus on energy though- we built Electric Highways, Britain's leading network of electric vehicle charging points, we helped Forest Green Rovers become the greenest football club in the world, and, in partnership with RSPB, we launched Britain's greenest mobile phone service, Ecotalk.

Ecotricity is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to providing equality for all.
