Software Engineer (Safety Critical)

Gloucester, although other EDF locations (Bristol and Glasgow) may be considered. Hybrid working, typically 2/3 days on site. Full Time, Monday – Friday with a flexible work pattern. We will also consider part-time, including flexibility around childcare/caring commitments.

The Opportunity…

We are looking for a Safety CriticalSoftware Engineer to join our Nuclear Services Business.

Your engineering work will directly support EDF’s nuclear new build projects at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, as well as EDF’s existing nuclear fleet operations. Your responsibilities will include some of the following:

• In-service support to the design and development of Safety Critical, software-based Control and Protection systems.
• Performing and supporting the qualification of software-based equipment. This may include the specification and/or performance of software assurance activities, these could include tool-based analysis of code, auditing activities, as well as authoring of test specifications, qualification plans, assessment reports and other safety-related justifications for the use of software in nuclear applications).
• Providing advice within EDF on the software aspects of Safety Related Instrumentation and Control (I&C), e.g. small commercial off-the-shelf devices, PLCs, as well as other large scale plant computer systems and their associated tools and applications.
• Acting as technical coordinator for software-related research projects, and contributing to the delivery of training on relevant technical topics

Each of the above may include:

• Production and/or verification of internally produced documentation and technical reviews and client acceptance of externally produced engineering and safety.
• Participating in discussions to resolve technical issues with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators.

Who you are…

Your background may include some of the following skills or experience; however, if you haven't encountered some of them yet, we at EDF will provide development opportunities to give you the necessary training and experience in these areas.

You may never have worked in the nuclear industry before, but we welcome applicants from all sectors.

• Specification, design, implementation, verification & validation, and/or substantiation of complex (preferably high integrity / safety related) software.
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle (including safety-related software testing & analysis methods and tools).
• An appreciation of development lifecycles for complex logic devices such as FPGAs and/or microprocessor-based systems.
• Knowledge of legacy and/or current plant protection and control system software technologies.
• An understanding of software failure modes and how they are managed.
• Degree (or equivalent) in relevant engineering, computer science, mathematics, or science discipline.
