Software Engineering Higher Apprenticeship

Purpose of Role

Are you someone who’s itching to build a career in Software Engineering? Motability Operations has an exciting opportunity for you to join our Software Engineering team on a two-year apprenticeship programme, rolling into a permanent role upon completion. On the programme you’ll spend four days a week as a Software Engineer within one of our teams, and one day a week dedicated to completing an online education programme to achieve a Software Developer Level 4 Qualification. If you’re interested in obtaining a Level 6 Qualification, equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, we’re able to offer this upon completion of the initial apprenticeship.

When you’re working in our teams, you won't be on the side-lines – you'll be right in the thick of it, applying and broadening your skills, being an active member of our agile product teams. Your work will revolve around developing and maintaining production software that matters to both our internal and external customers.

We’re passionate about fostering collaboration, and that’s why every developer carries the same title of ‘Software Engineer’. We believe in a level playing field where your voice and ideas count, regardless of your experience level. Of course, your colleagues will be there to guide you every step of the way. Plus, you'll have regular one-on-one chats with a dedicated mentor who'll be there to offer you even more advice and support.

If you are keen to learn more about our company culture, you can read about our core values: We Find Solutions, We Drive Change, and We Care.

About you

We are dedicated to unlocking your full potential, and we are eager to welcome a diverse range of skills and talents. Here, we see Software Engineering as more than just writing code. It's about fostering creative collaboration within diverse teams, harnessing each other's strengths to solve real-world problems and enhance our customers' lives.

We're not looking for the "finished product" and whether you've gained some coding experience through school, college or as a personal hobby, we're interested in team-players who are enthusiastic about learning, growing, and contributing their unique perspectives.

If this sounds like the kind of opportunity you'd love – working with interesting tech, growing within a supportive team, and being part of company with purpose – we can’t wait to hear from you!

Minimum criteria

  • To have the right to work in the UK
  • To have lived in the UK continuously for the past 3 years
  • At least a grade of 4/C GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English
  • 3 A levels at grade A-C in any subject (attained or predicted).
  • You’ll need to have some practical coding experience in any language.
  • To have not previously studied the course content
  • To not undertake any other qualification during your apprenticeship

About the team

The Software Engineering team is part of the Technology division of the company. Here, we collaborate across diverse agile product teams, consisting of Software Engineers, Quality Engineers, UX Designers, Business Analysts, Product Specialists, Product Owners, and a dedicated Scrum Master. Together, we join our expertise to deliver exceptional value to our customers.

We have a hybrid working environment, where we typically spend 3 days working together in the office, and 2 working from home.

About Motability Operations

Motability Operations is a unique organisation, virtually one of a kind. We combine a strong sense of purpose with a real commercial edge to ensure we provide the best possible worry-free mobility solutions to over 700,000 customers and their families across the UK. We are the largest car fleet operator in the UK (purchasing around 13% of all the new cars sold in the UK) and work with a network of around 5,000 car dealers and all the major manufacturers. We pride ourselves on delivering outstanding customer service, achieving an independently verified customer satisfaction rating of 9.6 out of 10.

Our values are at the heart of everything we do. They represent ambition, and we look for our people to live and breathe them every day:

At Motability Operations, we believe in building a diverse workforce, where our people are empowered to attend work as their true selves, and we encourage people from all backgrounds to apply. We want to sustain a culture that nurtures, where employees are free to flourish and where they’re rewarded equally, regardless of race, nationality or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, or gender.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive employer and as such, all our offices provide first rate disability access. With our hybrid working environment, we do our best to accommodate part-time and flexible working requests where possible, building on our culture of trust, empowerment, and flexibility.

Please note, Motability Operations reserves the right to bring forward the closing date of any of its job vacancies if we receive a suitable number of quality applications from which to make a shortlist. We look forward to hearing from you.
