Job Description

We operate in the following areas:
Underwater Warfare: this includes working on game changing naval Integrated Sonar System (ISS), hull mounted anti-submarine warfare sonar system, towed array sonar systems, surface ship and submarine torpedo defence and countermeasures, and distributed anti-submarine warfare systems (sonobuoys), including Multi-Static Active (MSA) technologies.
Maritime: this includes new build and modernisation solutions for naval combat systems, combat management systems, electro optical surveillance and tracking, weapon fire control and servo control and signature measurement solutions for both surface and sub-surface platforms.
Land: this includes vision systems and turret servo control and the capability to implement improvements and upgrades across all electronic systems for armoured fighting vehicles.
C2ISR: this includes deployable Air Command and Control and data link systems as well as complex surveillance and security solutions for maritime surface, underwater and land borders.
Through-life Support: solutions are also part of our offering, including contractor logistics support, waterfront support, spares and inventory management, technology refresh of own and third party systems.
Purpose of Role
Ultra Maritime UK has a strong portfolio of in-service products and new development projects focused on the provision of world class sonar systems for anti-submarine warfare. These products make use of advanced signal processing, complex graphical Human Computer Interfaces, and software\hardware interfaces. Over the last few years Ultra has been awarded several contracts to deliver both greenfield and upgraded sonar software applications to a variety of customers around the world. These programs will be resourced using engineers from multiple different global geographic locations and therefore strong software leadership required.
As a result, we have an immediate and ongoing requirement for a Software Engineering Manager with strong skills in establishing and managing software development programs. The applicant will ideally have set up and managed a similar SW program in the past, and also have working knowledge of needs of a typical software development team that utilizes C++, Java and Python and the associated configuration control repositories and build pipelines in a virtualized development environment.
In this role you will be working closely with teams of software developers, mathematicians and physicists who are designing, implementing, and testing sonar system solutions on a variety of programs and from locations across the globe. The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for maintenance of the program budget and schedule and ensuring issues are seen ahead of time and actions put in place before they become a problem.
The role also potentially provides the opportunity to take on a wider leadership role within Ultra including line management of software engineers, and with recruitment into the various software teams. An element of travel to other sites both within and outside the UK may also be required with the role.
Key Responsibilities
  • Day to day management of the Software Engineering scope ensuring the development program is on track.
  • Compiling reports on progress and managing the budget and estimates to complete.
  • Interfacing with internal and external customers as required.
  • Fostering a good working relationship with the software team leads and ensuring that the processes are in place to enable them to do their work.
  • Working closely with the other subsystem leads to ensure that dependencies are tracked, and issues dealt with promptly.
  • Setting up and chairing program reviews at the different stages of the software development lifecycle.
  • Understanding of Industry best practice and identifying how it can be integrated into the programs with minimal disruption.
  • Contributing to greater alignment on tools and practices across the teams as we look to streamline our development processes.
  • Fielding, triaging, and addressing day to day issues from the program teams as they arise.
Skills, Qualification and Experience
  • Experienced in managing a SW Development team.
  • Experienced in coordinating resources from a variety of global locations.
  • Experienced in chairing technical meetings with a variety of stakeholders including the customer.
  • Experience of gathering and reporting metrics and presenting them at monthly program reviews.
  • Knowledge of Agile development processes or similar would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Azure DevOps or similar would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of a software development language C++, Java or Python would be an advantage.
  • Good degree in a STEM subject with some experience of software development either as part of post graduate work or industrial experience.
  • Coaching and mentoring of junior staff would be an advantage.
