The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.  We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.   Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.   The role Would you like to join a pioneering team pushing forward the frontiers of space engineering and science? The new UKSA-funded 'SpaceCraft’ initiative at the Surrey Space Centre enables us to work with educational bodies and local companies to boost skills in the region and nationally and also build SSC's own capability further. Hence SSC are looking to recruit a Space Engineer/Scientist to work directly with Further Education institutes and other bodies (including companies) to develop materials and activities for improving Space Skills training in the region. This will include; Engaging with FE colleges (initially Alton College) to understand how such training activities can be undertaken within or in addition to their current programmes (BTEC/HNC/T-level/A-level) Understanding the needs of regional small and medium companies for similar training Developing exciting training materials and activities in conjunction with SSC engineering staff - initially Cubestas, high altitude balloons and Earth observation data sets could be the focus of some programmes but further ideas are welcome. Delivering the new training in stages and assessing its effectiveness Extend successful programmes to other settings (including University sector) Established in 1979, SSC is an internationally acclaimed centre of excellence in space engineering and science, which enjoys an outstanding reputation for the quality of its research and teaching and has strong links with the space industry. SSC has an extensive range of space test and experimental facilities including a satellite ground station and operations centre; large cleanroom; thermal, vacuum, vibration, radiation and shock environmental test facilities, large granite tables for zero-friction experiments, propulsion laboratory; solar simulation facility and prototyping maker-spaces. We are currently benefiting from a new £800K investment jointly by the University of Surrey and the UK Space Agency to boost academic-industry collaboration and improve UK Space Skills: this initiative will also significantly develop the Centre’s facilities and capabilities. About you The successful candidate will have space engineering and science expertise with versatile contribution to the Space Centre in research and education; a passion for engaging students in the space sector, hands-on practical approach to engineering and data with experience in complex project environments, collaborative work skills, and capacity to enhance outreach activities, and strong health and safety awareness.
