Job description

Monitor and maintain high professional standards of Neurophysiological services to patients. To take responsibility for each investigation undertaken, whether within the department, on the wards, in theatre or on emergency call out. Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure service(s) meet changing healthcare needs. Provide support and assistance to Neurophysiological staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature. Participate in the implementation of policies. To provide, for patients, some basic, but in the majority complex diagnostic procedures which encompasses the planning, performance and interpretation of a range of neurophysiological investigations to a high level of competence. Included are, the; - Performance of Electroencephalographic (EEG) investigations employing current standard techniques without supervision in the EEG department taking appropriate action(s) where necessary. Also perform EEGs on the ward. Patients of all ages are seen by the department. - Performance of emergency EEGs on the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Special Care Baby Units (SCBU/PICU) or general wards within the hospital and to undertake appropriate action when necessary.* - Performance of EEG investigations using special techniques. These include; activation recordings, recordings following sleep deprivation, recordings during administration and maintenance of sedation, recording during general anaesthesia, recording during stimulation of a non-routine nature, e.g. postural change, * - Performance of long term ambulatory EEG monitoring and taking appropriate action(s). * - Performance of polysomnography (PSG) recordings and MSLT/MWT. * Performance of Nerve Conduction Studies for Carpal Tunnel syndrome * and other peripheral neurophysiological conditions ** Performance of Magnetic Stimulation studies. ** Performance of advanced evoked potential recordings Back-averaging techniques, Movement Related Potentials and Bereitschafts Potentials. ** - Performance of all modalities of evoked potentials (VEP/SEP/BAEP/MEP), taking appropriate action(s) where necessary. * Examples above of the range of specialist techniques which could be undertaken *-complex **- highly complex Provide reports on specialist Neurophysiological investigations. Participate in audit and/or research and development programmes. Maintain continuous professional development appropriate to the range of Neurophysiology services to patients. Provide an out of hours week-end Neurophysiology Service. Undertake simple fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of recording equipment or any apparatus within the department including care and maintenance of electrodes. Contribute to the effective and efficient use of information resources, administrative patient reporting and data storage. Ensure personal compliance, with regard to mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs. Ensure personal compliance with CPD guidelines and professional codes of conduct. Contribute to the maintenance of statistical information as required for statistical and other processes. Contribute to the health and safety and quality assurance policies to patients, staff and visitors. Communicate with; patients, carers, nursing and medical staff, managers, medical electronics and medical physics departments, administrative and clerical staff within the Clinical Neurophysiology department, all grades of Neurophysiologists within the Clinical Neurophysiology department, risk assessors etc. Participate in the teaching and training of all routine procedures to other Clinical Physiologists (Neurophysiology) and staff grades in the department as required.
