NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern is Monday-Friday (09.00-17.00), the service also covers rotational Saturday mornings and public holidays (08.00-12.00) & rotational evening work (17.00-19.00).

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join the Histology Department within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

The Pathology Department provides a comprehensive analytical and Consultant led clinical Histopathology, Cytology and Post Mortem service to clinicians working within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and other Health Boards.

The post holder will : -

  • Contribute to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the Department of Pathology.
  • Perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Specialist Biomedical Scientist.
  • Be responsible for own work and use specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
  • Acts as a mentor to and participate in training/supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers.

Applicants must be registered as a Biomedical Scientist with HCPC and have obtained a degree in Biomedical Science, and hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

Applicants must have previous experience of working in a NHS diagnostic laboratory environment and must possess good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. Other essential skills are; accuracy and attention to detail, as well as having the ability to work as part of a team, and have an understanding of health and safety when working with and handling chemicals / hazardous tissue.
