Job description

The post holder will participate through flexible working arrangements in the delivery of the twenty-four hour telephone enquiry service. The post holder will also respond to the specific needs of the service by maintaining the integrity of its information databases, conducting research and authoring documents deemed appropriate by the director of the NPIS (Cardiff). To participate in the production of Poisons Information monographs for the National database TOXBASE.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To answer enquiries from authorised users of the service, and provide them with information and advice appropriate for the management of poisoning/suspected poisoning. It is the responsibility of the Information Specialist to search a range of databases, which may differ in opinion and, independently judge the suitability of information prior to issuing advice, often in the context of a highly complex situation. In certain circumstances it may be appropriate to refer an enquiry to the on-call medical staff.
1. To participate in the twenty-four hour rota 365 days a year. This will involve working 8 hour day and evening shifts, although longer shifts will be required overnight.
1. Ensure the continuity of the telephone service at all times.
1. To provide an out-of-hours telephone answering service for UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and refer calls deemed relevant to the Scientific Officer on-call as directed by the standard operating Procedures provided.
1. To provide information or offer advice to members of the public on occasions where they may be either distressed or intoxicated. The caller may be attempting to self-harm or be concerned that a relative or friend has been self-poisoned.
