The School of Army Aeronautical Engineering (SAAE) trainers are a ‘whole-force’ mix of Military and Civil Service personnel, who play a key role in delivering world-class technical training to a broad audience of soldiers across a varied aviation maintenance curriculum to ensure the army’s continuing airworthiness. Specialist Instructional Officer (SIO) roles offer interesting, demanding and rewarding opportunities to shape and nurture the next generation of Army Aviation Technicians and Supervisors, helping to prepare them for demanding operational roles.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Person specification
The ideal candidate should be a great communicator with the ability to effectively describe complicated ideas to different audiences. You must be well organised, proficient in time management, and have good public speaking skills. You'll be required to be both strategic and reactive, assessing the skills and knowledge within the group and determining what training is needed to grow and nurture these individuals.
The working environment is a mixture of Classroom and Practical based training delivery, which takes place within the delivery area premises and using modern learning methods. The practical training is carried out using both legacy and in-service military helicopters, simulators/emulators, and ground training aids.
SAAE is growing its capacity to meet additional Army demand. Further SIO vacancies are expected over the coming year and as such a reserve list will be compiled to fulfil this eventuality.
Please be aware successful candidates for the SIO positions are required to obtain Disclosure & Barring Service (formally Criminal Records Bureau) clearance, as well as the UK Government’s Security Clearance (SC).
The successful candidate will be responsible to the Training Managers for:
- Classroom and practical instruction on topics within the aircraft discipline and various allied subjects.
- Delivering Training Objectives that will prepare students for the next step of their career path.
- Building a course specific training programme, preparing lesson plans and for identifying training needs by evaluating trainee strengths and weaknesses.
- Developing or overseeing the production of classroom hand-outs, instructional materials, aids and manuals.
- Directing structured learning experiences and monitor their quality results.
- Teaching in other delivery areas, as required, to meet changing operational needs.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential: Level 3 Aeronautical Engineering or Level 3 General Engineering (with skills transferable to Aeronautical Engineering).
Desirable: CertEd (or higher) teaching/training qualification. Ideally, you will have >5 years practical experience in aviation maintenance combined with experience in instructing others. However, Training Courses are available for those non-qualified.

The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.

This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. 2. Undertake a short technical examination to identify your areas of strength within Aviation Engineering
