Job description

The post holder will be based in EBME Walsall under the auspices of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE). The post holder will primarily be responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive medical device service program across all community sites. In addition the post holder may be required to support the general EBME team, working with a broad range of medical electronic instrumentation, to provide maximum flexibility. This will include working to a planned preventative maintenance programme for medical equipment.
The work will include duties on all Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust sites and may include other locations where MPCE has an agreed commitment to provide a service, including work under contract or service level agreement.
The service will be provided over 5 out of 7 days with standard hours being 37.5 over 5 days. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to negotiate appropriate flexible working hours.
He/she should have a full UK driving license.
To participate in the full range of work undertaken by the EBME Walsall section in the community, such as commissioning, repair and preventative maintenance of complex medical equipment for which the section carries responsibility.
To achieve and maintain a level of expertise which, combined with substantial personal initiative, will enable procedures to be completed without supervision.
To assist in producing records of equipment maintenance, repairs, hazards, incidents, etc. which may be relevant to the technical support service.
To contribute towards the development of the f2 Performance Management System used within MPCE.
To develop and nurture constructive relationships with clinical users, and maintain a high degree of teamwork with other members of the EBME Team, and with service providers.
To contribute as required towards the training of other staff, and to co-operate with medical, nursing and other staff.
To be available for on-call work should this become necessary.
To conform to safe working practices, and departmental policies and procedures.

Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in2018,extension of a Neonatal Unit and brand new, state of the art Emergency Department is in the process of being completed.

To be managerially and technically responsible to the EBME Walsall Section Head for all ongoing managerial, administrative and professional matters.
To be professionally accountable for matters that affects the calibration, servicing and maintenance of medical electronic equipment to the EBME Walsall Section Head.
To participate in the full range of work undertaken by the EBME Walsall section in the community, including support on an agreed basis to other Trust areas as needed, and assist with Walsall EBME contractual obligations, being responsible on a day-to-day basis for each aspect of the work to the EBME Walsall Section Head.
To carry out procedures which will be complex and to share in the broad work of the EBME Walsall section. This work will require constructive relationships with clinical users to be established and maintained, and a high degree of teamwork.
To achieve and maintain a level of expertise which, combined with substantial personal initiative, will enable procedures to be completed without supervision.
To participate in the commissioning, repair and preventative maintenance of complex medical equipment for which the section carries responsibility, and to ensure that the highest possible standards of safety and of technical work are achieved and maintained.
To participate in laid down work schedules and to assist in maintenance of records of equipment maintenance, repairs, hazards, etc. which may be relevant to the technical support service, including the implementation of new and revised protocols and standards, such as Medical Devices Trust Policy, Managing Medical Devices (April 2015), Clinical Governance, CQC, Standards for Better Health and other applicable standards and policies.
To ensure, in co-operation with the EBME Walsall Section Head, that a technologist is available to clinical users within an agreed maximum time, following an initial call.
To co-operate closely with all EBME Walsall and MPCE staff with regard to electronic and mechanical aspects of safety, on-going maintenance and development of medical equipment.
To contribute towards the development of the f2 Performance Management System used within MPCE.
To be responsible for writing out reports for adverse incidents occurring in the post holder’s area.
To use personal initiative and specialist expertise wherever appropriate to optimise the workflow and priorities within the post holder’s area.
To be responsible for maintaining records of equipment, repairs, hazards, etc. relating to the technical service.
To contribute as required towards the training of other staff, and to co-operate with medical, nursing and other staff.
To be available for travel to other hospitals and sites as required by the post.
To be available for on-call work where necessary.
To demonstrate a flexible approach to the needs of MPCE.
To conform to safe working practices, and departmental policies and procedures.
To undertake any other duties which may be required by the Head of Department, the Head of Clinical Engineering, Head of EBME Walsall or Section Head EBME Walsall, and which are appropriate to the post.
