Job description

Salary: £80,000 starting salary

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

Security Level: BPSS

We are the UK's Aviation and aerospace regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

The CAA’s doctors (Medical Assessors) are responsible for certificating the medical fitness of CAA-licensed personnel (mostly pilots and air traffic controllers) and overseeing Aeromedical Examiners (AMEs), to achieve and maintain a high level of aviation safety. Medical Assessors contribute to developing evidence-based aeromedical policies and guidance for the national and international arena.  During the training programme, you will be sponsored to complete an MSc in Aerospace Medicine, which includes attendance on a 6-month full-time course and completion of the examination for the Diploma in Aviation Medicine (if you have not already done so). You will have the opportunity to gain experience with other organisations involved in Aviation and Space. It is anticipated that on completion of training, you will continue to work at the CAA as a specialist.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for enthusiastic, highly motivated individuals with good clinical and analytical skills. You will be registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice in the UK.

You should have at least completed core medical training, and, after completion of medical school and foundation training, there are four main routes to entering specialty training in Aviation and Space medicine:

1. IMT1-3 Internal Medicine Training (completion of two-year Core Medical Training programme is also acceptable) with completion of MRCP (2 or 3 years)

2. CT1-3 Anaesthetics training with completion of FRCA primary (3 years)

3. CT1-4 Acute Care Common Stem, ACCS (acute medicine) with completion of MRCP (4 years)

4. ST1-3 General Practice training with completion of MRCGP (3 years)

You should also be able to demonstrate an interest in Aviation and Space (medicine).

We offer a range of benefits such as payment of GMC and medical indemnity costs, 28 days annual leave, a competitive pension and more. Wherever possible, we offer flexible working hours.

We will be holding a webinar for those interested in finding out more about the job. For further information please contact Mrs. Katherine Sweeney at AvSpaceMed@caa.co.uk
