Job description

Specialist Tradesperson - Plumbing

Location: Brighton, BN2 0AL

Salary: The salary for this role will be £35,000 per annum

Reporting to: Deputy Head Facilities (Maintenance)

Main purpose of the role: This role is an essential part of the facilities maintenance team, with the emphasis on assisting the specialist trade positions and being a lead on general plumbing work. General maintenance experience and knowledge is required for this role and the ability to be self-motivated and organised. The post will work alongside the Specialist trade positions and associated facilitated team.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

* Maintenance and repair of both the hot and cold water systems within College properties Including the installation and removal of domestic dish washers and washing machines;

* Maintenance and repair of the heating systems within College properties (no gas work required as essential but Gas Safe would be desirable);

* Maintenance of the drainage systems;

* Alterations to the above with some new installation work. Analyses problem and identifies appropriate tools and materials for repair;

* Working at high-level to clear and maintain gutters and complete other repairs, including harness work on roofs;

* Tiling and decorating;

* Occasional groundworks and repairs;

* Repairs to lead work;

* Use of ladders and use and erection of tower scaffolding;

* Supporting other trades within the department including undertaking non-plumbing maintenance work as required;

* Attending training courses as required;

* Exercising maximum care when on College premises, paying due regard for the College's Health and Safety Policy;

* Having regard for the security of the College, reporting any suspicious activity or occurrence;

* Being part of the College's out-of-hours On-Call system (on completion of probation).

Person Specification:

* Must have served a recognized apprenticeship and obtained Level 3 City & Guilds 6035 / NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing;

* Completed Legionella awareness trainings;

* Demonstrable experience in general plumbing;

* Physical fitness, encompassing the ability to bend, stretch, lean, reach, carry heavy and awkward items;

* Good verbal and written communication skills;

* A polite, cheerful and helpful attitude;

* The ability to speak confidently and courteously to parents, pupils, and staff of all levels of seniority;

* Some of your work could be physically demanding and involve lifting. You may also need to work at heights, using ladders;

* Practical DIY skills to carry out minor repairs;

* The ability to manage your own workload;

* Good problem solving skills;

* Awareness of health, safety, security and hygiene issues;

* A willingness to work flexibly;

* A willingness to learn and develop within the role;

* Ability to work within a team;

* Experience of working in a school or college environment is desirable.

Hours of Work:

* 40 hours per week, working from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday with a one hour unpaid lunch break each day.

* On completion of probation you will be expected to go onto the on-call rota for which you will be paid.

Holidays:

23 days, plus bank holidays increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 2 years of service.
