Job description

The Speciality Doctor Ophthalmology post in anterior segment is for a full time 10.0 PA career doctor. The post is for 12 months. This post is suitable for a person who wishes to undertake a range of duties in the Victoria Eye Unit and in our associated peripheral clinics, focusing on glaucoma, cornea and external disease. The degree of responsibility given to the appointed doctor will be commensurate with his/her experience and managed by the clinical lead & consultant ophthalmologists in the Hospital Eye Service
The Victoria Eye Unit is a tight-knit and friendly department based at Wye Valley NHS Trust, serving the county of Herefordshire and surrounding area. We have the largest catchment area of any department within the Trust and serve a population of approximately 250,000.
The department is actively focused on continuous improvement and has well equipped clinics, with fully networked imaging facilities. A comprehensive eye casualty service is provided, and a wide range of ophthalmic surgery is carried out.
The degree of responsibility given to the appointed doctor will be commensurate with his/her experience and managed by the clinical lead & consultant ophthalmologists in the Hospital Eye Service. The timetable will necessarily be flexible to fit with the needs of the service, out of hours commitment is not expected. An example timetable is included purely for guidance and details will be altered depending on skills and experience of the individual, needs of the department, and the number of sessions contracted for. Experience in delivering intra-vitreal injections such as Lucentis would be an advantage. Applications will be considered from candidates wishing to work part-time.

The appointee will work in hospital and community clinics within Herefordshire and see new and old patients, following protocols and patient referral and treatment pathways.
The appointee will be involved in the training and supervision of junior members of medical staff, nursing and technical.
The appointee will be expected to have good working knowledge of general ophthalmic diagnoses that might be encountered in practice. Evidence based and protocol based decision making is expected, under the supervision of the consultant or clinical lead.
The appointee will be expected to have or develop other skills of benefit to the acute trust such as Lucentis clinic work and minor operations. Appropriate evidence based and protocol based decision making is expected, under the supervision of the consultant or clinical lead.
Quality assurance, medical audit and continuing postgraduate education will be an important function of the post and time will be set aside on the timetable for this. Study leave will be available to enable the post holder to attend meetings and courses in keeping with CME requirements and subject to the conditions of the Trust’s Medical Study Leave Policy.
There will be no on-call duties, although on occasion there will be opportunities for ‘locum’ on-call work as the need arises.
The appointee undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstance
The appointee is expected to keep up-to-date with current clinical practice, and may make arrangements to attend local departmental teaching meetings where these fit with their timetable and duties. The post holder is also expected to attend national and international meetings to update on general and specialist ophthalmology.
