Job description

THIS ROLE IS INTERNALLY RESTRICTED

To apply for this job, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an employee of Kirklees Council.
  • Be employed by Kirklees for the duration of the recruitment process – up to and including the start date.
  • Have successfully completed your probationary period.

(Please note that if you work for an Academy, you are not an employee of the Council.)

Your employment status will be checked, if you do not meet the above requirements your application will be rejected.

The role will be predominantly home-based with some travel to Kirklees, regional and national meetings required as part of the role.

The Council has recently developed an ambitious Data and Insight Strategy. To support and enable delivery of our Strategy, we are building a new Data and Insight Function within the Council.

About the role

This role is one of several exciting new roles we’ve created to contribute to a successful, efficient and effective Data and Insight Service. As a SQL Developer in the Council, you will get the opportunity to work with a wide variety and large volume of interesting and high value datasets and the work you do will directly contribute to improving health, social and economic outcomes across Kirklees.

This is an exciting time to join us as we build the Council’s data engineering and development practice. You will get the opportunity to work with the latest technology (e.g., MS Azure) and be part of a journey that includes embedding agile ways of working.

You will lead work on database design, development, maintenance and management; utilising modern and best practice development standards to seek out opportunities for efficiency, effectiveness and innovation.

About you

We are looking for someone who shares our energy and ambition for how data can be used to make a tangible difference to outcomes for people and places.

You will have proven experience in designing, building and testing data products and services. You will have a deep understanding of the concepts and principles of data modelling and have experience of producing relevant data models across multiple subject areas with efficient and appropriate structures for business intelligence and analysis.

As a SQL Developer, you will be confident in your ability to develop, implement and embed best practice standards, tools and approaches, ensuring quality is central to everything we do. You will be committed to continuous improvement and have a desire to succeed – individually and as part of a team.

If you are looking for a role that is challenging and hugely rewarding, and you have the skills and ambition we are looking for, we would love to hear from you.

About us

Kirklees is set in the heart of beautiful West Yorkshire and has a growing population of c440,000. With the two major centres of Huddersfield and Dewsbury, it also encompasses several smaller towns. It is well served by both rail and road networks and is in close proximity to Leeds and Manchester.

We are a metropolitan single tier authority, the 13th biggest local authority in the UK in terms of population. We have an elected leader and cabinet structure, and a very talented and dedicated workforce.

We are committed to building a strong local democracy and offer many exciting career opportunities for those who want to help us achieve this. We value our workforce and want everyone to have their say.

We are a modern and progressive council, committed to family friendly, flexible and agile ways of working - as well as offering many other benefits including a generous pension scheme and annual leave entitlement of 27.5 days a year (plus public holidays). We’re committed to staff development and continuous improvement.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Gareth Corris (Data Engineering and Development Lead) at Gareth.Corris@kirklees.gov.uk.

Closing date: 11th February 2024

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable adults and children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
