Your skills will not just be pure database skills, we like people who have a good, wide knowledge, but have a specialism. Yours is databases. You love thinking about efficiency, performance, design, security and so many other aspects of the database. You have ideas and are willing to share them; we will listen. You understand the importance of the customer and will jump to help out when customers have issues. You think carefully about edge cases, and overflow issues, and constantly imagine ‘what if’ scenarios. Ultimately, everything revolves around the data, so your role is a key role in the organisation.
Experience
- Understand / can talk about / are able to design quality databases
- Write / optimise SQL statements
- Ensure performance, security, and availability of databases
- Write excellent specifications and documentation
- Brilliant at things like upgrades, backups, recovery, migration
- Confident with looking at server/DB resource usages and able to maintain performance
- Able to collaborate with other team members and empower stakeholders to make good decisions
Qualifications and Skills
- Honestly, we prefer people with a specific degree or equivalent qualification in software engineering, but don’t be shy to apply if you don’t have this. Some of the best people didn’t study Software Engineering at University
- You have experience with one or more modern relational databases. This doesn’t mean you don’t love noSQL databases, we are open to using the best technology to achieve the goal
- That means you also know SQL pretty well. You don’t have to be a guru, but you must know your way around a SQL database
- We are expecting some form of best practice knowledge. The desire to learn is paramount but you need to start at a reasonable level
- You can troubleshoot common database issues
- You are familiar, even if only a little bit, with tools that can aid profiling database resources to enable you to optimise them
- You are knowledgeable, or have some experience, with code versioning tools, like Git, Mercurial, SVN or others
