An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, dynamic, multidisciplinary Interventional Radiology and Vascular Access Team. This is a permanent full time post . We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated nurse willing to advance their career and take on new challenges in this highly specialised aspect of radiology.
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, (RCHT), is the main healthcare provider for the population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, providing a full range of Clinical, and Emergency services. The award winning Clinical Imaging Team is an integral part of many patient pathways, providing services at Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro, St Michaels Hospital, Hayle, and West Cornwall Hospital at Penzance, together with Community Clinical Imaging departments based at Isles of Scilly, Camborne/Redruth, Falmouth, Bodmin, Newquay, St Austell, and Stratton Hospitals.
The Interventional Radiology (IR) service and Vascular Access teams are based within the Newlyn Unit, which houses “state of the art” equipment placing the service at the forefront of IR delivery in the South West, and the nurse-led Vascular Access and paracentesis service involves placement of intravenous devices for medium to long term therapy and placement of abdominal drains at the bedside.
To work with the IR and Vascular Access Lead Nurse and Radiology Team Leaders to ensure the efficient and cost effective delivery of the Interventional radiology, Vascular Access and Paracentesis service.
To work as part of a team providing a 24 hour, 7 day service for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, including a commitment to the ‘on-call’ service.
To deputise for the senior nurse staff in their absence or when required as deemed appropriate by the IR and Vascular Access Lead
To work closely with the Clinical Imaging multidisciplinary team to deliver a high quality service.
To provide clinical nursing expertise to the radiology department to ensure the highest possible standard of compassionate patient centred care.
To comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulation (IRR 99), Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) regulation (IR(ME)R 2000) and the Trust Radiation Safety Policy.
Training will be given in all aspects of interventional radiology and Vascular Access as well as the management and leadership skills required to perform the role. This will be achieved through a structured and documented program of self-directed learning and clinical competency based assessment.
Candidates should have a minimum of one years post registration experience in the acute setting.
Experience of radiology/ theatre nursing and the placement of Vascular Access devices would be an advantage but not essential.
This is a full-time post working 37.5 hours per week, covering 7 days a week. The interventional radiology team delivers an emergency weekend and out of hours service.

Assessing the individual needs of patients attending the Clinical imaging Department.
Planning and implementing the care needs of all patients undergoing interventional and diagnostic radiological investigations and procedures.
Carrying out nursing procedures and interventions as required, in accordance with local and trust policies and in consultation with other members of the healthcare team.
To act as a ‘scrub nurse’ and assist the Radiologist during sterile procedures.
To act as a circulating and recovery nurse for all procedures.
To ensure the safe transfer of patients from beds/chairs to x-ray tables
Have responsibility for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust policy including the administration of intravenous medications
Monitor patient’s progress work towards safe and timely discharge plans and ensure barrier of discharge are identified and acted on appropriately. Correct hand-over to ward nurse and ensure patients are transferred back to the ward safely.
To act as an advocate for patients, ensuring that their needs and opinions are represented in the delivery of the service.
Have an understanding of the needs for universal precautions at all times and be aware of the infection control policy when equipment is used
To ensure that all relevant information regarding the patient is communicated to nursing staff and other healthcare professionals as necessary and that the standard of documentation is in accordance with Trust policy.
To work collaboratively with clinical staff in the management of IV-related care for patients across the Trust.
To assess the individual requirements patients requiring IV therapy to ensure the appropriate selection and placement of a Vascular Access device.
To provide the specialist advice and support to patients, carers and other health care professionals regarding venous access devices.
