Storage Administrator
About the team/job
Working closely with members of I.T. and Technical Services (ITS), and more widely with technical users across EMBL-EBI, the Storage Administrator will play an active part in the design, deployment and operation of the substantial storage resources in place to support the processing of the large data flows fundamental to EMBL-EBI activities.
Day to day the Storage Administrator will work with the Storage sub-team, HPC team, members of IT & Technical Services and users
Your role
Working as part of the Storage team, under the direction of the Storage Lead the Storage Administrator will:
- Ensure the operation, reliability, and integrity of EMBL-EBI’s storage resources Recommend, design and implement future EMBL-EBI storage infrastructure, including both logical configuration and physical racking and cabling Ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of storage by working closely with users to understand storage requirements Support users and investigate and resolve complex issues where in-depth evaluation of various technical and non-technical factors is required Work closely with HPC team to ensure HPC storage systems remain performant, tracking and diagnosing issues associated with intense or unusual cluster workloads Automate the setup and configuration of storage infrastructure, using vendor and open source tools such as Ansible Benchmark storage performance as part of procurement activities, and track performance over the lifetime of storage systems to ensure they remain performant Maintain and update reporting interfaces to deliver monitoring and accounting of the infrastructure Build positive relationships, communicating openly and professionally within the team and with stakeholders from the TSC and wider EMBL-EBI community Produce high quality documentation to support work done, and work actively to share knowledge within the team
You have
- Degree in computer science or equivalent industry experience
- At least 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of large scale and high-performance storage infrastructures
- Diplomatic approach to conflict resolution Solid experience in the provision of high performance, parallel file systems such Lustre, GPFS, VAST, Weka or others Solid experience in bare metal hardware deployment Strong Linux administration skills, ideally with RHEL or a RHEL clone Solid skills in automation frameworks, including Ansible Solid skills in at least one programming language, ideally python Experience in debugging complex issues within storage systems related to user/workload behaviours or hardware
You might also have
- Solid experience in the provision of hardware based storage solutions across a range of vendors (Isilon, NetApp, Pure, etc.)
- Experience with storage benchmarking tools for example ior, iozone, warp etc
- Experience with cloud technologies, including Google or AWS certification
- Experience with various network technologies, such as Ethernet and InfiniBand
- Experience with methodologies for infrastructure monitoring
