Job description

Job Title: Strategic People Lead - Talent / Learning
Job Location: UK Flexible Location, Home and Office based
Salary: £75,000 per annum plus benefits, based on 35 hours per week
Contract Type: Permanent

We have two possible roles available and we are looking for one new team member, to be focused on either talent or learning.

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over. We help them to recover and move on with their lives.

We are part of the Red Cross and Red Crescent global humanitarian network.

The Role

You will operate as a key leader at the British Red Cross (BRC), driving forward the people agenda with the organisation. The role ensures that the experience of our people, be they staff or volunteers, is paramount – working with senior leaders to continue our people journey. Challenging and encouraging decisions, utilising people data to spot trends and other insights, the role will steer the organisation, supporting the development of a fully safe and inclusive culture and helping to retain and grow our talent. Operating as a key member of the relevant Directorate Management Team and of the People senior team, you will bring together your people expertise with understanding of organisational needs, identifying opportunities and supporting the efficiency focus within People.

We are looking for someone who has excellent business partnering experience with either a background in learning & development or in talent management.

Depending on your expertise, you may ensure that employees and managers – and volunteers, where appropriate – can follow best in class performance management practices, where conversations have significance, ratings and outcomes are simple, and there is clarity for all regarding development opportunities and next career steps. This should be supported by a succession planning approach that can be used at all levels, to identify future talent and ensure that we build a diverse and exciting internal pipeline.

Alternatively, you may be accountable for developing and delivering learning to meet the needs of the organisation, working collaboratively across the BRC to ensure that volunteers, employees, managers and leaders feel empowered and confident in their roles. You will also ensure that we have the learning structure and resources to deliver the best possible service to those who need us.

To be a successful Strategic People Lead you’ll need:

  • Considerable knowledge of the full range of People services (Resourcing, Learning and Organisational Development, Employee Relations etc.), with demonstrable experience in either the talent management or learning & development space
  • Strong and proven team and line management skills, with ability to manage teams with broad remits in complex environments
  • Able to role model a high-level of management standards
  • Able to think strategically, bring vision and direction on a departmental scale with technical and operational influence
  • Data literacy and financial management skills with ability to manage a large and complex budget
  • Considerable experience as a senior professional, or senior operational manager with extensive experience of working with HR professionals
  • Experience of working in a senior business partnering structure
  • Experience of leading, supervising and developing a multi-disciplinary team
  • Managing complex organisational change.

Diversity is something we celebrate, and we want everyone to be able to feel comfortable to be themselves, celebrate our differences and feel connected to each other and the organisation. We want you to be in an inclusive environment where you belong, and in a great position to help us spread the power of kindness. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are underrepresented at senior level in the British Red Cross People team. This includes those who are LGBTQ+, people from minoritised ethnic groups, disabled people and men.

The closing date for completed applications is 23:59hrs on Wednesday the 27th of March 2024 with interviews to follow
Please apply early, as we’ll be reviewing candidates throughout. We reserve the right to close the ad in advance of the published date.

In return for your dedication and expertise, you’ll get:
  • Holidays: 36 days annual leave (including bank holidays) + option to buy 5 extra days.
  • Pension scheme: Up to 6% contributory pension.
  • Flexible working: We do our best to accommodate your preferred work style.
  • Learning & Development: Wide range of career opportunities + comprehensive learning.
  • Discounts: Access to Blue Light Discount Card and employee benefits platform.
  • Wellbeing Assistance: Access to mental health and wellbeing assistance.
  • Team Working: Champion our mission in a collaborative team.
  • Cycle2Work: Lease a bicycle through the scheme.
  • Season ticket loan: Interest-free loan for commuting expenses.

We are proud to participate in the disability confident scheme for roles based in the UK. During the application process, you will be asked if you wish to apply under the scheme.
At the British Red Cross, we pride ourselves on our diverse workforce, and ensuring we have an inclusive environment for all our staff and volunteers. We remain dedicated to ensuring our teams can bring their true selves to work without risk or fear of discrimination. We do this through regular data reporting, and the assistance of our internal Race and Equality Network (REEN), LGBT+ Network, our Disability and Wellness Network (DAWN), Gender Network, Carers Network and Youth Network.
