Subject Manager - Philosophy and Extended Essay

Permanent, full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Salary Circa £44,000 per annum

IB Global Centre, Cardiff

Hybrid working (office presence required 1 day per week)

Job Purpose:

The Subject Manager will be accountable for coordinating the production of assessment papers and the subsequent marking and grading process in Extended Essays and Group 3 Subjects within our Diploma Programme, with a focus on Philosophy.

Within the role you will identify a specialist group of authors to create assessment papers before working closely with our Publishing Team to coordinate the production of assessment content in a variety of languages to include English, French, Spanish, Japanese and Korean.

The Subject Manager will support the effective delivery of the assessment cycle by monitoring the subsequent marking of assessment material by teams of contracted educators, including senior examiners and chief examiners. In addition, you will oversee the completion of standardisation prior to the launch of live marking and the conduct of grade awarding to ensure fair grades are awarded.

Moreover, you will support IB schools through responding to assessment-related queries and delivering communication as required.

Job Duties:

  • Direct authoring teams to produce high quality assessments in compliance with the departmental guidelines.
  • Coordinating international teams of senior examiners to ensure reliability, accuracy and fairness of assessment within the portfolio.
  • Implement effective standardization processes and monitor the marking of assessment material. Utilising expertise to propose grade boundaries for approval when required.
  • Analyse assessment statistics to draw conclusion on assessment validity and reliability.
  • Plan and manage expenses related to designated tasks/subject, as appropriate.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders any relevant information or advice on assessment related matters for the designated subject in a variety of languages.
  • Represent the assessment perspective in curriculum review.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Subject Manager to support digitalisation of assessment for respective subjects.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to designated subjects.
  • Work closely with other departments of the IB, particularly those within the Education Office, and will occasionally represent the IB at international conferences and events.
  • Assist with additional duties as required to deliver departmental objectives outside of the direct area of responsibility.

Job Requirements:

Essential

  • Degree level qualification (or equivalent) within a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrable understanding of educational assessment within Secondary-Level or Higher Education; for example this knowledge could be gained from experience as a teacher, examiner or from experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects to agreed timelines.
  • Ability to coordinate professionals and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Competence in using office software (including Microsoft Word, Excel, cloud solutions) with a willingness to accommodate innovative ways of working with and using digital media
  • Effective presentation skills for a variety of audiences and purposes.
  • Ability to commute to the office when required (with advanced notice) outside of the standard once a week arrangement.
  • Ability to work from home with a reliable internet connection.

Desirable

Written proficiency of additional languages to English would be highly desirable.

Other Special Requirements:

Flexibility to work weekends during peak examinations sessions (May/June, November/December) and occasionally at unsociable hours – we run flexi hours policy to compensate for any overtime worked.
