As a casual Swimming Teacher you’ll thrive on working with swimmers to overcome their fears and creating engaging lessons that lead to swimmers who want swimming to be a lifelong habit.

About you

  • As a casual Swimming Teacher, you will bring to the role:
  • Technical knowledge gained from a Level two SEQ or STA swim teachers Award/Certificate qualification
  • Passion for teaching others and a big imagination.
  • Patience and understanding so you are adaptable to the needs of the swimmers
  • Willing to learn and develop your swimming knowledge and teaching skills to help provide the best swimming lessons.
  • Outstanding customer service skills, being able to show the customers why we do what we do.

About the role

Active Leeds offers a range of swimming lessons including Adult & child, a comprehensive Learn to Swim Programme, disability lessons, adult lessons, lifesaving, diving and competitive swimming, all of which you get involved with. As well as the opportunity to be part of our team of Swimming Teachers there is the chance to develop your skills and explore new aquatic pathways.

As our next casual Swimming Teacher you’ll be passing on your swimming knowledge in a creative way that engages our swimmers to be the best they can be and how to enjoy water safely.

The role is integral to our Active Leeds Learn to Swim Programme, Active Leeds has a strong Swimming Teacher team, and we are keen to give everyone who wants to attend our swimming lessons the opportunity.

Job Description

Purpose of Job

  • To deliver the Leeds learn to swim programme as directed by the Sport and Active Recreation service.
  • To encourage the development of swimming throughout the city.
  • To give the opportunity for all participants to develop their potential to the highest possible standard.

Responsibilities

  • To engage in the coaching and teaching of Swimming to enable participants to reach their full potential.
  • To deliver sessions in a professional manner, abiding by the City Council and National Governing Body codes of conduct.
  • To contribute to a fun and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  • To undertake administrative tasks in connection with programmes of work i.e Teaching plans, Class registers, monitoring and evaluation.
  • To carry out the above duties in compliance with council policies including Equal opportunities, Child protection and Health and Safety.
  • To ensure promotion and support of Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety
  • To undertake any other duties, as directed by the supervisor, which may be reasonably required of you, commensurate with your grade and level of responsibility

Qualifications 

  • Hold the ASA/UKCC Level 2 Swimming teachers award or an equivalent qualification

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.

  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people. 
  • Able to adapt to the needs of individuals and different work situations.
  • Able to work flexibly as part of a team and also with minimum supervision. 
  • Able to understand and interpret instructions.
  • Able to demonstrate good organisational skills. 
  • Able to inspire and motivate participants in aquatic activities.
  • Hold the ASA/UKCC Level 2 Swimming teachers award or an equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of Risk Assessments and Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Relevant knowledge of Child Protection and welfare issues.
  • Experience of teaching/coaching swimming to people of all ages.

Desirable requirements It is desirable that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post.  Candidates are not required to meet all the desirable requirements however these may be used to distinguish between candidates. 

  • Hold the National rescue award or equivalent.
  • Hold the foundation module of the National pool Lifeguard Qualification.
  • Hold ASA Level 1 or 2 Teacher Disabilities.
  • Hold ASA Adult & Child water activities.
  • Hold ASA level 1 or 2 Diving.
  • Hold ASA level 1 or 2 Water Polo.
  • Hold ASA level 1 or 2 Synchronised Swimming.
  • Hold RLSS Rookie trainer award.
  • Experience of working with swimming camps. 
  • Experience of working within a schools swimming programme. 
  • Experience of managing/mentoring staff. 
  • Experience of administrating a learn to swim programme.
