Role:                Coroners Officer

Department:    Sheffield

Location:         Medico Legal Centre, Sheffield

Salary:             £29,874 - £33,915 (pro-rata)

Hours:              22.5hrs per week – Monday to Wednesday

Contract Type: Permanent

 

Details about the role:

We have this interesting role as a Coroners Officer working on behalf of South Yorkshire Police Force and in liaison with staff within the HM Coroner’s Office. The Coroners Officer will undertake duties in connection with the investigation of sudden or suspicious deaths.

What the Coroners Officer role will be responsible for:

  • Administrative and investigative tasks associated with the receipt of notifications of death to HM Coroner.
  • Deal with Initial enquiries which includes speaking with the recently bereaved.
  • Facilitate necessary arrangements for post-mortems and inquests as directed by HM Coroner.
  • Liaise with stakeholders such as Police, Hospital staff, GP’s, registrars etc, to gather information and ensure all necessary reports are obtained.
  • Enquiries to be made regarding the deceased person as directed by HM Coroner, including file / case-building and the occasional taking of statements for the Court.
  • Assist in the preparation and vetting of statutory disclosure for the inquest process.
  • Out of hours on-call duties for one week every fifteen weeks. (Telephone cover)

Skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience of working in an investigative or medical capacity.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Able to work long hours at short notice.
  • Must possess a strong disposition.
  • Must have a sympathetic and compassionate nature and have the ability to deal with sensitive and difficult situations.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels including preparing high quality reports.
  • Must possess good attention to detail.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of investigative processes.
  • Experience of medical terminology.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
