Core Service Systems Consultant (Linux/ Unix) (Permanent, Full Time)

What will I be doing?


As Core Services Systems Consultant you will be working with the architecture teams to create design new solutions. You will support the existing infrastructure and applications and work alongside the core services team so that the systems you are responsible for are reliable, available, up to date, and secure.

Your technical skills will need to be kept up to date to support the systems you are responsible for and you will manage requests coming into the team to be able to support strategic product developments or introductions. You will also need to be able deal with third line faults, escalations, and customer issues to a high level.


Some of your key accountabilities will include:

  • Working with the architecture team to design and implement new solutions in line with business requirements
  • To maintain up to date hardware and software for the systems they are responsible for
  • To work closely with the security team to understand and resolve vulnerabilities in their area of responsibility
  • To understand company strategy and how their area of responsibility will need to develop to meet it
  • Ensure their area of responsibility adheres to all KCOM processes.
  • To ensure their area of responsibility has adequate plans and procedures in place to meet KCOM Business Continuity requirements
  • To ensure all documentation and processes are created & kept up to date


What do I need to do this job?

  • Excellent communication skills
  • In depth knowledge of ISP technologies, including but not restricted to:

o DNS

o Radius, CAR and TCL scripting, Accounting etc

o DHCP

o Database knowledge, MySQL, Oracle etc

o Scripting

o Email services, Cisco IronPort, SMTP, POP IMAP

o Web Services, Apache etc

o NTP

  • Knowledge of Server technologies, including but not restricted to:

o Linux, RHEL, Debian etc.

o UNIX, Solaris, FreeBSD etc.

o Cisco UCS, Dell HCI

o Virtualisation, VMware.

o Storage, NetApp, Dell EMC, Fibre Channel

o Networks, knowledge of load balancing, GSLB, and troubleshooting, Wireshark etc.

o Application Security, Patch management, System Hardening and best practice implementation

o Embraces and leads change


Other skills which would also be desirable would be:


  • Automation, e.g. Ansible, Puppet
  • Firewalling
  • Database Clustering
  • Programming, C, Perl etc
  • Sandvine DPI
  • Knowledge of Legacy KCOM Systems
  • Monitoring Systems
