Job description

We are seeking a highly qualified, enthusiastic, and driven Teacher of Acting to join our friendly, professional and highly talented Performing Arts Team, many of whom bring industry experience to the department of 26 teachers and 11 peripatetic staff.  In recent years, the results have been outstanding with consistently over 70% of the BTEC students achieving D*D*D* (last year 78%).

The appointed person will be expected to teach the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Practice (Acting) and contribute to the acting skills on our equivalent course in Musical Theatre.  In collaboration with the Head of BTEC and other members of the Department, the Acting teacher will generate the vision and ethos for the courses detailed below, and in the process develop the most innovative core units. Additional specialist units will be offered to students to enable the flexibility students require to pursue modular choices that reflect their own interest.

Our ethos is one of shared responsibility to which all teachers make a significant contribution. An integral part of this role is the planning, preparation, rehearsal, and performance of large and small scale productions within the School’s Performing Arts programme.

All staff at ArtsEd are expected to sustain and improve the quality of training and education that is offered to the pupils in the school.

Role responsibilities:

  • To direct rehearsals, and both live and recorded performances.

  • To promote and develop effective teaching and learning across BTEC Acting and Musical Theatre
  • To maintain and monitor appropriate records of pupils’ learning and achievements
  • To write reports, provide subject/year information to parents, attend parents’ meetings and respond to parents’ enquiries
  • To implement the school’s agreed policies
  • To take part in the school appraisal programme
  • To attend meetings as appropriate
  • To maintain liaison with the Tutors of individual students and Forms
  • To organise day trips and visits in line with the school’s agreed procedures and risk assessment policies
  • To contribute to the BTEC Acting and BTEC Musical Theatre assessment calendar.
  • To mark work set in relation to the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 course mark scheme.
  • To have a clear working knowledge of BTEC structures to be able to deal with issues and situations as they arise.

Qualifications:

  • QTS (desirable not essential)

Knowledge:

  • An excellent knowledge of Acting approaches and practitioners (current trends and historical context) with a clear ability to teach and inspire using a range of teaching strategies relevant to the subject.
  • A sound knowledge of the Edexcel BTEC Performing Arts specification is desirable but not essential.
  • A working knowledge of and experience working with a lighting board and QLab is desirable but not essential.

Experience:

  • Relevant teaching experience, preferably in a co-educational environment
  • Relevant experience of nurturing young voices
  • Experience in directing plays to an excellent standard collaborating with a production department and leading a production and technical process
  • Professional vocational experience is desirable but not essential.

Skills and abilities:

  • Excellent and experienced Teacher of Acting in both one-to-one and group classes.
  • Experienced and confident Director.
  • Ability to organise and integrate own specialism into the study of relevant units within the BTEC performing arts specification
  • Ability to inspire and develop young students.
  • Evidence of first-class teaching skills.
  • Effective classroom/studio manager.

Personal competencies and qualities:

  • The all-round ability to discharge all professional duties properly.
  • The competence, stamina, and professionalism necessary to discharge all professional duties effectively.
  • A willingness to allocate own time to rehearse productions with students or give additional one-to-one support to students applying to conservatoires.
