Job description

The High School of Dundee is seeking to appoint, from August 2024, a well-qualified, enthusiastic, and effective Teacher of Physical Education.  The successful candidate will join a friendly, committed and high-performing department.  At this stage, applications are invited from GTCS registered teachers and those who are currently at university and will be completing their probationary year during academic session 2024-25.The ideal candidate will have achieved a significant level of performance and/or have taught/coached hockey and at least one of the following sports: rugby, netball, tennis, athletics, and cricket. Department StaffingThe High School of Dundee’s Physical Education department comprises of a Director of Sport, Head of Hockey, Head of Rugby and eight Physical Education teachers.  This includes staff who are also members of the Senior School’s Pastoral Care and Support team. The department also employs several sport-specific coaches who focus on the development of a range of sports and teams. Accommodation and Resources The High School of Dundee is an all-through school with timetabled Physical Education and Games being taught to all year groups, from Nursery to Senior Years Form 6. The Physical Education Department is based at Mayfield Sports Centre which is located on the same site as the school playing fields (Mayfield and Dalnacraig), approximately a mile and a half from the main school buildings. The facilities include a superbly appointed modern sports centre, five rugby pitches and two international level all-weather astro turf pitches: one water-based; the other sand-dressed.  The Junior Years L1-3 classes continue to have their Physical Education lessons in the School’s original gym hall which is situated within the main school campus.  The Mayfield Sports Centre is used exclusively by the School from 8am to 5.30pm weekdays and from 8am to 1.30pm on Saturdays throughout school terms. All pupils from L4 to F6 use the centre for a minimum of 2 hours of Physical Education and Games per week.  Curriculum and TimetableThe successful candidate will be expected to teach timetabled Physical Education and Games to all age groups in both the Junior and Senior Years. There will be a requirement to deliver High Performance Sport sessions and/or teach SQA National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher Physical Education.  An ability to work well with pupils of all ages and across the full ability range is therefore essential.In addition to teaching timetabled Physical Education and Games classes, all Physical Education staff at the High School of Dundee are expected to commit and fully participate in the School’s co-curricular activities, this includes but is not limited to; running co-curricular sessions before/after school and organising/assisting with weekly sports fixtures and events, which include Saturdays.  Key Outputs & Responsibilities:The main responsibilities of the role include:•    Teaching Physical Education and Games to pupils from Nursery to Form 6•    Preparation of pupils for internal and external SQA examinations •    Curricular development as directed by the Director of Sport•    Involvement in co-curricular activities, visits and trips linked to the department •    Pupil discipline within the department •    Meeting with parents and colleagues as required •    Contribution to the Physical Education departmental improvement plan  Person SpecificationThe successful candidate will be educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a related subject and be registered with the GTC Scotland or be eligible for registration.  They should also have experience of teaching Physical Education and Games and should be able to demonstrate initiative as well as a commitment to excellence. The successful applicant should have drive, enthusiasm and a dynamic approach to the teaching of Physical Education. A positive contribution to curricular development initiatives will be expected.  As well as possessing good organisational and administrative skills, excellent interpersonal skills are vital as the post will inevitably involve interaction with colleagues, parents and outside agencies as well as pupils.
