Job description

Our current Early Years Adviser is retiring in March 2024. We are seeking to make a full-time appointment in order to maintain and further develop the highly successful Early Years work that is well established in Merton.

Merton has a strong community of schools with 95% judged to be good or better and pupil achievement above the national averages at statutory assessment points. There is a close partnership between schools and the Local Authority with a shared commitment to improving outcomes for all pupils.

The School Improvement team works closely with the Early Years service, and the position would include developing strong collaborative working across all Merton schools and within Private and Voluntary settings.

You will join a highly motivated, friendly School Improvement team who are dedicated to improving the outcomes for all pupils and who are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. There is a very supportive, small team of advisers who work closely together and report to members of the Inspection team.

The key focus of the role is improving outcomes and experiences for all Nursery and Reception aged children, and to work along colleagues in developing best practice with schools and PVI settings. Key tasks will include delivering training, working with staff in schools, leading networks, analysing data, and liaising with the wider community and other council departments.

We are looking for someone who has a strong track record in improving outcomes for children in early years settings, both as a teacher and through leading significant School Improvement initiatives as a senior leader. Your strong interpersonal skills mean that you can influence, inspire, support and challenge others so that children and young people can achieve their best. You will have an understanding of the Early Years curriculum and assessment processes and tracking.

We are committed to:

  • promoting equality of opportunity and social inclusion
  • eliminating unlawful discrimination
  • promoting good relations between employees and communities of all backgrounds.

If you would like further details about this role please contact Ewan Morrison, School Inspector ewan.morrison@merton.gov.uk for a confidential conversation.
