Job description

The Department of History at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Global History with specialist knowledge of the colonial history of South Asia. The role holder will have a PhD already awarded (or to be awarded by the time of the appointment) in the relevant subject area or equivalent qualification, with teaching experience at undergraduate level in Global History (with a focus on the colonial history of South Asia). The role holder will convene and teach the second-year UG module HIST2049 ‘Rule and Resistance in Colonial India’ and the third-year UG special subject module HIST3109 Slavery, Caste & Capitalism’. Additionally, the role holder will convene an MA module in Global History, may be asked to undertake First Year UG seminars, and may supervise a number of undergraduate dissertations. The role holder will contribute to an exceptional education for undergraduates in history and the Department’s teaching culture. The role holder will also contribute positively to the Department’s and School’s initiatives in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. We are welcoming, supportive and caring, conscious that diversity in our community is fundamental to our values and vital to our success. The role holder will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people currently underrepresented in the field of History, such as those from marginalised genders (e.g. women, non-binary, trans), people with disabling conditions, and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.  Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter. About the role: Deliver modules in Global and South Asian history, and contributing lectures and seminars within the Department's overall teaching programme. Supervise and examine undergraduate students. Support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and learning skills. Take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. Be responsible for administrative duties. Contribute to impact, public engagement and interdisciplinarity. Contribute positively and proactively to the Department’s teaching culture. This is a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed-term post commencing 1st September 2024 until 28th March 2025. Job share arrangements may be considered. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Jeremy Taylor, Head of Department, email: jeremy.taylor@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
