Job description

Team Manager Children in Care

How you'll make a difference

At South Gloucestershire Council we are immensely proud of the skills, abilities, and compassion of all our social workers and wider team members – demonstrated even more so during the pandemic.  As a Team Manager you will provide support, recognition, guidance, and professional oversight to team members within your practice area.

We are looking for a talented strong and ambitious leader to join our strong management group within our wider Children in Care Service to lead one of our Children in Care teams.

This role includes managing social workers allocated to a full range of Children in Care, which may also include Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC), Early Permanence and Care Leavers.

If you are either a current Team Manager, looking to develop their practice in a different practice area or an experienced practitioner with supervisory experience looking for their progression into management, this is an exciting opportunity to develop your career further.

What will you be doing?

You will have the usual targets to achieve, but you will also have a very supportive leadership team around you, that are always accessible from the very top down.  You will be a natural leader and able to get the best out of your colleagues and team members as we continue to implement further improvements across our services.

If you can focus on the people behind the Social Worker title – we know you will achieve the best for all of children and families.

  • First and foremost, as a supportive manager you will be able to get the best from your team members whilst ensuring they are fully supported and know how valued they are.
  • Ensuring a focus on the individual and assisting in personal and professional development through the several available pathways and programmes offered by our Children’s Services.
  • You will lead and oversee a consistently good service to these looked after children and young people as well as ensure specialist assessment and support is undertaken and delivered effectively to improve the outcomes and promote a positive future for Children in care, unaccompanied asylum seeking children or care leavers.

What we need from you

  • You will have relevant professional qualification and experience in a relevant setting, such as Corporate Parenting or Social Care that must include experience of management of staff, and supervision of other professionals.
  • You will be able to evidence your ability to lead teams to achieve optimum performance in delivering excellent social care services for children.
  • You will have evidence of on-going continuous professional development and a thorough knowledge of current legislation and practice relating to children and young people’s services.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing social workers responsible for age assessments or evidence of service improvement would be desirable.

Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.

You will be required to travel widely to a range of locations within the Authority so you must have a current driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle insured for business use.

How a career at South Gloucestershire Council is different

  • We invest in the careers of our people and we are recognised for the quality, breadth and depth of our training and development offer, which helps our people make the greatest long-term difference in their work.

Tim is one of our Team Managers within Children in Care and has progressed his career in South Gloucestershire.

“Working at a smaller authority, you might think that there are fewer opportunities to develop and progress, but I think the opposite is true. We’re a relatively small authority and we have strong connections with services managers and heads of service.

We have strong links between teams and there are good opportunities to experience different parts of the service, which is something which I’ve definitely benefited from.”

Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.

  • We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of
  • We're working with the most vulnerable in our community to help them achieve what they want in life
  • We're investing in our schools to ensure every child and young person in South Gloucestershire achieves their full potential.

We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference.

We’re making a difference, be part of it!
