Job purpose

Drive forward the implementation of key components of the organisation’s cloud centric modern Data and Analytics estate. Operate as the Technical Lead / Lead Engineer on activities to develop new data capabilities, whilst guiding the elaboration of technical requirements and design decisions.

Balance hands-on development with Technical Leadership, design and supplier assurance activities, operating as the technical subject matter expert where required, while ensuring strong engineering and DataOps practices are implemented and adhered to across both internal and supplier led workstreams.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Head of Data Engineering to define the Data Platform implementation roadmap and technical approach, including the identification of future enhancements and growth opportunities.
  • Take the Technical Lead on a critical business system integral to the running of the Bank that supports all of the bank’s core data needs.
  • Provide technical guidance and expert knowledge to the Head of Data Engineering and stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with business stakeholders and operational teams to lead prioritisation of changes and lead defect backlog prioritisation and scheduling.
  • Work closely with other Technical Leads, Architecture function, and other IT leaders to define priority targets and developmental opportunities.
  • Assure platform performance, stability of the system while helping to write governance and keeping the policies relating to system up to date.
  • Assure platform performance in accordance with agreed SLAs and provide leadership and coordination in the resolution of platform defects, outages and incidents.
  • Be a key person responsible for liaising with suppliers to agree the roadmap of priority projects and services to be provided.
  • Take technical and engineering leadership ownership to ensure focus on priority tasks including the co-ordination of development activities, release planning, testing strategies and planned maintenance.
  • To further support and develop members of the emergent Data Engineering team, providing appropriate mentoring and coaching to facilitate growth and progression.
  • Keep abreast of industry technical best practices and new trends, ensuring innovative development of systems to meet organisational immediate and future needs.

Person Specification

Knowledge/Experience/Skills:

  • Demonstrable hands-on experience with the Azure Data Stack, including but not limited to ADF and Synapse. Experience with Microsoft Fabric is desirable.
  • Significant experience of python and data pipeline development, ideally using Spark.
  • Design of data pipelines for ingest, transformation and publication.
  • Implementation experience of DevOps and DataOps best practices for engineering, test and ongoing service delivery.
  • Experience leading development and engineering teams from a technical perspective (line management not necessary).
  • Data Pipeline testing, including automated testing, data validation and code assurance.
  • Data formats for ingest, transformation and analytics.
  • Data Security, Access control and Authorisation.
  • GDPR and Data Privacy.
  • ETL and Reverse ETL.
  • Agile Delivery Practices.

Desirable:

  • Financial Services experience.
  • Data integration.
