Job Description for Technical Support Officer (Consignment and Flasking):

As part of the Consignment and Flasking Team, the Technical Support Officer (TSO), will coordinate all movements of dangerous goods onsite between facilities and off site through the Sellafield limited consignment team. Working closely will all our customers to support the delivery of their work.

This role is based on the Sellafield Site but will need to be flexible to cover all NNL sites if required.

Main Responsibilities for Technical Support Officer (Consignment and Flasking):

  • To act as main point of contact for the Laboratory with the Site Licensee Consignment team, for Class 7 (Radioactive Material) Transfers.
  • In conjunction with the Site Licensee Consignment Team the TSO will:
    • Arrange the transfer of nuclear or radioactive materials into or out of an area, including completion of the correct documentation.
    • Ensure the correct selection of packaging and compliance with the Certificate of Approval.
    • Ensure that the contents of a package and the method of packing is in accordance with the relevant Certificate of Approval.
    • To ensure that consignments of nuclear or radioactive materials comply with the safety case for the receipt area.
    • To act as intelligent customer to Sellafield Limited Consignment Team.
    • To authorise the dispatch of on-site packages using the Site Licensee Systems.
    • To ensure the necessary handover documentation associated with movements is completed at the handover stages.
    • To inform the NNL DGSA / NNL Technical Support Manager of any incidents/events associated with transport operations which occur under their jurisdiction.
    • To keep an auditable record of all radioactive materials transport movements.
    • Be appointed as Radioactive Material Coordinator & Dangerous Goods Dispatch Officer.

Essential Criteria for Technical Support Officer (Consignment and Flasking):

  • Knowledge of the requirements for the movement of dangerous goods.
  • Evidence of self-motivation with demonstrable levels of drive, energy and resilience.
  • Demonstrable effective communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of personnel.
  • Ability to work well in teams.
  • Good organising and co-ordination skills.
  • Minimum GCSE’s A-C in Maths, English and Science. 
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Technical Support Officer (Consignment and Flasking):

  • Knowledge of the nuclear industry.
