Job description

An opportunity is available for a Telecoms Operator based in the South West National Grid Telecoms team, ideally to be based in one of the following locations but other locations within the South West distribution area will be considered.


South West – Plymouth, Exeter or Taunton

Main ResponsibilitiesAs a Telecoms Operator you will be carrying out maintenance, inspection, supervision and installation tasks across the National Grid Telecoms network. You’ll be results driven, to ensure our National Grid Telecoms teams and customers receive excellent support and service.

The work will involve working along and away from the depot. The working environment requires quick, decisive and responsible actions to meet the demands of the role. You will have challenging targets and will need to be flexible in your approach. You will:


Respond to enquiries, both verbally and in writing from Telecoms team members or from Customers.
Operate and maintain the National Grid Telecoms Support mailbox system.
Administer various databases supporting National Grid Telecoms.
Provide administration and support to the National Grid Telecoms teams.

The Ideal CandidateYou must be able to communicate effectively both verbally, and in writing, with customers and other team members and must be able to represent the company positively at all times.

You must be reliable, well organised and be able to work as part of a small team and you must be able to work using your own initiative. Possession of basic keyboard skills is desirable and full training will be given on the applications used.

As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements. To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. You may still be considered if, for example:


you have been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
you were studying abroad
you were living overseas with parents
