Job description

What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?
For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear weapons research and development. We have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent - Trident. We also use our unique skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.
It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?
AWE has a unique opportunity for a Theoretical Physicistto join our Design Physics Group.
This is an exciting role within Design Physics, split between two areas:

  • You can support multiple projects related to the physics of nuclear weapons, using your broad knowledge of physics, and showcasing your problem-solving abilities.
  • The other part of the role supports a team improving and implementing particle transport methods in the bespoke multi-physics codes used at AWE.

Location: We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with onsite parking. There are good bus links between Reading, Basingstoke, and Newbury.
Although flexible working is available, there are very limited opportunities to work from home - due to the classified nature of this role, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the vast majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston, once obtaining the appropriate clearance.
Salary:
  • Junior Physicists (recent graduates): £31,000 - £35,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)
  • Experienced Physicists (PHD or graduates with post-graduate experience): £38,000 - £46,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Closing Date : 16th January 2024
If we receive an exceptionally high level of applications, this vacancy may close early, so don't delay, apply now!
The Role:
The Design Physics Group underpin theoretical and modelling capabilities to enhance the understanding of the complex physical processes associated with nuclear weapon function, whilst applying them to the current and future product designs. They use state of the art multi-physics codes to model hydrodynamics, radiation transport and nuclear processes using a range of experimental data to benchmark the predictions. A role within this group involves working as part of a team, alongside independent research. A strong physics and mathematics background and an inquisitive nature are particularly relevant to this discipline.
Key Responsibilities
  • Research, investigation and production of techniques and solutions to complex multi-physics problems
  • Supporting research and development which has a direct impact at the level of the technical specialism

  • The ability to programme in C++, Fortran, Python or a similar high-level language
  • Knowledge of numerical methods related to particle transport
  • Experience in developing and applying mathematical models to complex physics
  • Experience of working in a Unix/Linux environment
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree, or a doctorate in a Physics/Maths subject area
  • A clear and concise communication approach, both oral and written
