What is the role?

Working as part of our multi-disciplined teams, we have a range of opportunities for students to support projects across our Thermal business. SSE Thermal are developing ground-breaking carbon capture and storage projects, are progressing options across the hydrogen value chain, and play a critical role in delivering net-zero.

Our Commercial and Engineering internships provide real hands-on experience through a 12-month placement. Opportunities are available within our Thermal Engineering and Asset Management team, business development team and Commercial team. Throughout the placement, you will have the support of a business mentor and buddy, who will provide guidance and support to enable you to reach your full potential. You will work on partnership initiatives, support negotiation of commercial agreements, conduct market and competitor analysis, support technology assessments and conduct a rich mix of research tasks.


Our interns work collaboratively in a variety of contexts, while also taking ownership of their role by working under their own direction to drive action forward. There will also be networking and presentation opportunities, specialist sessions and support from our graduates.


Business Development & Commercial: Low Carbon Power Team x 1 role - Hydrogen Market Development Team x 1 role

Locations: Glasgow, Perth, Reading or Leeds

A mixture of strategy, business, and project development. You will work either in the Low Carbon Power Team or in the Hydrogen market development team to originate and mature project opportunities and work with the engineering, grid, commercial, policy, and regulatory teams to build the business case.


Hydrogen Technology: Location: Leeds. Degree disciplines: Engineering

You will support the design development activities of hydrogen thermal projects. This includes hydrogen production (including derivatives), storage, hydrogen power generation. You will also support the wider team with specific technology expertise and coordinate wider engineering teams technical expertise to ensure robust assessment of technologies and design options are undertaken, design risk is mitigated, and project business case requirements are fulfilled.


Low Carbon Technologies and Project development: Location - Leeds

Interns at the Low Carbon Technology and Project team will be involved in low carbon technologies assessments which include carbon capture, energy storage and biofuel for power generation as well exposure to project development utilising these technologies. Interns will have opportunities to attend conferences, meet technology suppliers and work with SSE business and design team to develop projects within SSE Thermal.


What do I need?


We have opportunities for those studying degrees inclusive of, engineering, electrical, control and instrumentation, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, reliability, asset management, maths, science and economics. Our opportunities are open to students who are in their 2nd year of their degree onwards or those who have already graduated.


We'd love you to have some practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges and should have a genuine interest in SSE Thermal and the prospect of a long-term future with us.
