Tissue Bank Support Worker - Apprentice
Job Summary
You’ll play a vital supporting role in our Liverpool Tissue Bank the centre that supplies hospitals nationally with tissues required to save and improve patients lives.
You will be willing to work towards the Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship with Healthcare Science Diploma. If you do not hold GCSE’s at C and above for maths and English, you must be willing to work towards the Functional Skills qualifications.
Working as part of a team in our laboratories your job will be to clean laboratory equipment and storage areas to ensure a clean, sterile environment for us to process, store and release tissue grafts and implants.
You’ll definitely need all-round team-working skills including the ability to motivate yourself and other people; good communication skills; accurate record-keeping and the ability to prioritise your work even when the pressure is on.
There’s some lifting involved, so you’ll need to be prepared to do this; you’ll also need to work in low temperatures (when cleaning our freezer areas) and with chemicals such as dry ice or liquid nitrogen. You will also need to work in a sterile clean room environment, keeping your area clean and wearing protective overalls, gloves, masks, hoods and boots.

Main duties of the job
In this role you will study towards the Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship whilst working as part of a team to support and assist in the work of the Tissue Bank. Your responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out duties related to the cleaning of the laboratory clean rooms, equipment and storage areas to ensure a clean environment for the processing, storage and release of tissue grafts and implants.
- Working flexibly across the range of activities as rostered and assisting in developing the service in anticipation of future clinical needs.
- Monitoring and maintaining laboratory stocks and supplies on a daily basis to help optimise use of consumables and reduce wastage.
- Check and distribute incoming goods in a timely manner. Prepare stores orders, record receipt of goods inward.
- Ability to lift and carry items up to a weight of 15kgs, with and without the use of mechanical aids.
- Any other opportunities that will enable you to successful attain your apprenticeship.
On occasions you will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which may involve working irregular hours & for which prior notice will be given.

Experience of working with Information Technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)Qualifications and Training
- Commitment to studying towards and completing the Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship with Healthcare Science Diploma
- Willingness to complete the Level 1 Maths and English Functional Skills if GCSE equivalents have not been achieved Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)

Funding is only available for those who meet the government apprenticeship eligibility criteria. In general, there is a three-year residency requirement rule, with limited exceptions. Please check if you are eligible.
You will be required to work 37.5 hours a week including 1 day for apprenticeship study - 8am 4pm usual hours.
