The London office of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung is looking for an engaging political educator to work with us delivering training to Trade unions and social movements. The ideal candidate will have a background in Trade union organising, and be an experienced political educator, or have the skills and enthusiasm to become one.
Background: The London office of the RLS is currently in the second year of a four year political education strategy. Throughout much of the earlier 20th century, the working class in Britain built a formidable and widespread ecosystem of popular education institutions through parties, unions and working class associations. Political education was seen as an absolutely central part of the radicalization of the working class. But with the decline/decimation of these traditional institutions and working class life, and the atomization and precariatisation of working class communities, these institutions have almost entirely disappeared.
In response to this, we have developed a strategy that would enable us to contribute to the organisations trying to revitalise political education in the UK. In its first year, this strategy saw us develop and deliver a political economy course for Trade unionists. Year two will see us roll out this course multiple times with multiple unions, as well as developing a course on capitalism for young people, and roll out training to expand the pool of political economic educators in the movement (an educate-the-educators course). Years three and four of our strategy will see us collaborate with others to establish an independent political education institute to develop this work further.
We are seeking a freelancer to help us deliver year two of our strategy. The role holder will play a central role in the delivery of 6+ political economy and organising courses with Trade unionists. They will also play a role in development and delivery of the course for young people, and the educate-the-educators course. As the year progresses, we will take the first steps in the establishment of the political education institute, and the role holder will also contribute to tasks in this area.
Tasks: The role is designed to join our team of three staff in delivering year two of our strategy. While a number of tasks are crucial, we are aware that the best candidate may not be experienced in all areas of the job description. Please do get in touch, or submit an application, if you have interest in the role and experience with at least some elements of the job description. The staff member will be supervised by one of the existing staff team.
