Is excellent attention to detail ‘Your Thing’?

We are looking for reliable and hardworking individuals, who are willing to work outside and onboard our trains throughout the year to deliver spotlessly clean trains to our customers to join our team of Train Cleaners and lead them to success.

At Northern, we play a vital role connecting millions of people to work, leisure and education opportunities.

Connecting millions of people and communities across the North is our mission. With 2,500 trains a day, we connect people to jobs, friends, family, and the wonders of the North.
We're improving rail travel, enhancing the experience on board and at stations. Customers are at the heart of our business as we improve performance and create a better way to go.
We're driving economic value and sustainable growth for the North and its people. Our commitment to the environment means reducing our impact and enhancing the world around us.
Make a difference. Make it last. Make it yours. Make it easy. Make it happen. These are our values.
Ready to make them yours? Join us on this journey.

About the role:

As a Train Cleaner - Team Leader, you will play a vital role in supporting and leading your Train Cleaning team to offer a spotlessly clean train and a welcoming environment for all our customers. Not all of our roles are customer facing, we have station teams, TrainCare Centre teams (you'll be expected to be able to climb onto our trains from ground level), and on-board Train Cleaning Teams, who all have pride in the service we deliver for our customers and colleagues, as we always strive for excellence.

Our trains and stations operate 7 days a week and we complete four different types of cleans within our teams in 24 hours, so it can be more difficult than you may think, but you'll quickly hit that 10,000 step goal.

On our Night Shifts, we have two Cleaning Teams: a Full Clean team and a Deep Clean team. During your shift, we expect you to thoroughly clean our trains to ensure we continually deliver hygienic and functioning trains for our customers. The Deep Clean team are also expected to use specialist equipment to get rid of all ingrained dirt from all parts of the train - don’t worry we train you on how to use these. The initial training is 1-5 days in the classroom (dependent on location) followed by practical and on the job training, working with the Cleaning Team.

If this sounds like your thing, we’d love to hear from you.

Key responsibilities:

This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include, but are not limited to:
  • You’ll be responsible for the successful running of the shift, from start to finish
  • You’ll be expected to brief the team the shifts requirements and organise workloads to ensure our high standards are maintained
  • Ensure all Health and Safety protocol and procedures are always followed
  • Provide continuous support and relay our high standards to the team and any new team members
  • You'll be expected to answer questions/resolve any issues within your team
  • As well as working alongside the Cleaning Teams to ensure all work is completed in a timely manner

About you:

We are looking for reliable and hardworking individuals to fulfil this role. You’ll be willing to work outside, as well as on board our trains, throughout the year. You’ll also be flexible enough to deal with ever-changing demands. We teach you everything you need to know so you don’t necessarily need any previous cleaning experience.

If you fancy doing your thing as a Train Cleaner Team Leader, your greatest strengths will be:
  • Working in a team to get a job completed together
  • Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
  • Leading a team to successfully maintain Northern’s high cleaning standards
  • We like you to have pride in your work and pay attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Have excellent initiative and the ability think on your feet in sometimes difficult situations
And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing.

Our Benefits:

Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love. So, you’ll be able to make the most of:
  • Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
  • Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply
  • Defined Benefit Pension Scheme - you’ll rarely find a pension as good as a Northern pension, and we top up your pension with a generous 1.5 times your contribution.
  • Maternity and Paternity Benefits - we go above and beyond the standard, and mums can enjoy 9 months’ maternity leave on full pay while dads can make the most of 2 weeks’ paternity leave on full pay.
  • Employee Assistance Programme - advice, support and useful information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on everything from family issues to lifestyle matters.
