Job description

This Trainee Clinical Coder at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a new and exciting opportunity to learn new skills and become part of the Clinical Coding department.
The successful applicant will receive induction and training appropriate to the activities they will undertake, to enable them to become competent Clinical Coders.
The Trainee Coder will be trained to accurately abstract, analyse, and translate medical interventions and diagnostic terminology from a patient's medical record into alphanumerical classification codes.
The Trainee Coder will be trained to liaise with clinicians to ensure that sufficiently coded information is clearly provided in case notes to enable high levels of data quality

Key Result Areas
To attend all mandatory components of the Trainee Framework including:
  • Corporate induction
  • GHNHSFT mandatory training
  • Department based vocational assessments
  • Progress review meetings
To undertake training as required and agreed with the manager supervisor and external assessor and complete competencies relevant to the work area / department.
The post holder reports to the site Clinical Coding Manager and will be part of the team which codes activity at all hospital sites in the west or east of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust and the Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust. The post holder has no budgetary responsibilities or managerial responsibility.
The post holder will help provide high quality patient care by coding accurately and efficiently all inpatient and day case activity to required deadlines. Coding in line with national and local standards. Meet targets and deadlines in coding requirements and performance standards, set by the Head of Business Information (HBI), Head of Clinical Coding Strategy and Development (HCCSD).
Respond to professional guidance from the Head of Clinical Coding Strategy and Development HCCSD and Clinical Coding Managers in quality matters.
Identify data errors on the computer system and correct or refer to the appropriate member of staff. Inform the Clinical Coding Managers of inconsistencies.
Ensure compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation Act 2018 and The Access to Health Records Act preserving the confidentiality of health records at all times.
To complete all training in accordance with Trust policy.
To comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g., Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual handling, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.
To be flexible, with the ability to alter activities and priorities as the need arises
To participate fully in personal appraisal and development review process, maintain and complete the trainee portfolio.
Undertake any other appropriate duties commensurate with the role, as required at the request of your line manager.
