Latterfield Farming operates a trainee programme designed to provide enthusiastic dairy operators an opportunity to develop their dairy management skills in a hands on, highly skilled programme. The programme offers a chance to progress quickly both in responsibility and also salary, with a view to being able to command a well paid role within the Dairy Industry - either within or outside Latterfield Farming. In return we would like to employ enthusiastic people who want to learn and progress.
Our Business: We currently milk 350 cows three times a day through a modern herringbone parlour. Our cows are housed all year round in comfy sand cubicles and produce fantastic milk which is sold to a national retailer. Our current herd average is over 14,000 litres per cow, so all our cows are really special and cared for in great detail. We rear all our own replacements and grow grass silage, maize and cereals which is all fed back to the cows with the help of an independent nutritionist.
The Role: This is a varied role to include milking sessions which are 3 hours long and can be morning, day or evening or a combination of all three. In addition there is the chance to work in the yard during milking to bed the cubicles, scrape the passages and manage cow flow. The really exciting part of the role is the training in feeding, health management, transition management and data management, You will learn modern techniques in managing high yielding, high health status cows which have been adapted from Dairy Farms worldwide.
Skills, attitude and experience: This is first and foremost a dairy unit, and we place a huge amount of focus on our cows and youngstock. And so an appreciation of and passion for cows will go a long way. However the successful candidate will need to be an all rounder with plenty of drive to progress and flexibility to adapt to a dynamic workplace. The pace will be fast, varied and fun. Experience isn't necessarily essential although on this occassion we are looking for someone who has already started their dairy journey. The most important skill you will need is a keen eye for detail - whether in the parlour, out in the yard or on the tractor.
Pay and Reward: This is a full time role working 50 hours maximum per week over 5 days. We make sure that you have plenty of time off in the week so that when you are on duty you are sharp and focused. The £26,000 salary includes on farm accommodation if required. This can be either a well appointed modern caravan, or a cottage in a nearby village. If you can live locally we will adjust your salary upwards to reflect this. If you progress quickly and can demonstrate the skills required to progress to herdsperson, then salary will increase to £28,500 and then to £32,000 if you progress to Trainee Herd Manager. Progress will not be restricted into any of these roles. If you are keen to learn and progress we will train you and reward you.
