Job description

We are delighted to be offering this exciting opportunity to join our innovative, supportive and highly valued team of Educational Psychologists working in the beautiful and historic city of York.

We are looking for two Trainees, entering either Year 2 or Year 3 of the Doctorate Training programme in September 2024, who have a strong desire to live and work in or around the York area.

The Educational Psychology (EP) Service is highly regarded by schools/settings and families.

As an TEP in York, you will be working within a needs-led service model that supports a graduated approach.

We adopt a consultation model of service delivery which promotes early intervention and encourages creativity and flexibility of approach. We provide high quality statutory assessments across the 0-25 age range.

Opportunities for TEP development include:

  • working across the full 0-25 age range, including early years, post-16 and specialist settings
  • responsibility for providing a supervised and supported psychological service to a small cluster of schools in the city.
  • working systemically and across an organisational level
  • personal and team development as part of research-led working parties
  • co-delivering evidence-based training across a variety of areas, including ELSA, EBSA, trauma and attachment and Neurodiversity.
  • joint working with other EPs and colleagues in the Specialist Teaching Team, School Wellbeing Service and Virtual School.

See York Education for more information on CYC EP Service priorities (bottom of the page).

The Y2 TEP post is funded for 2 years, subject to a successful review at the end of the first year, and the Y3 TEP post for 1 year.

We provide high quality placements for Trainee EPs, working closely with a variety of Universities. Our TEPs typically choose to stay with us in CYC as qualified EPs.

We are looking for a highly motivated and passionate Trainee EP who is:

  • committed to inclusive philosophy and strengths-based practice.
  • a valued team player
  • an excellent communicator with effective time management skills
  • passionate about the application of psychology to promote person-centred approaches and achieve better outcomes for children and young people aged 0 – 25 years.
  • committed to building capacity within educational settings (all our secondary schools are rated Good or Outstanding)
  • confident and highly competent in delivery of training and consultation to a range of audiences
  • consistent in your delivery of high-quality casework
  • flexible and solution-oriented – we welcome innovation and creativity.
  • a proactive advocate of children’s rights

The EPS will offer you:

  • excellent professional relationships in a lively and supportive team
  • support to develop the skills required to become a forward-thinking dynamic Educational Psychologist
  • an enhanced offer of supervision with a Senior EP, a maingrade EP mentor, peer and group supervision.
  • opportunities to develop a range of skills and experiences to ensure you meet the relevant competencies leading to qualification.
  • a reduced allocation of statutory assessments.
  • a flexible approach to allocation of work, ensuring there is a balance between placement and University demands.
  • opportunities to undertake a wide range of CPD.
  • comprehensive IT support including laptop and smartphone.
  • flexible hybrid working arrangements, including multiple bases across the city
  • an excellent Local Authority staff benefit scheme with a wide range of clubs/societies/discounts.

You must hold an Honours degree in Psychology and be expected to successfully complete Year 1 of the Educational Psychology Doctorate.

It is anticipated that you will complete your Doctoral qualification and be registered with the HCPC as a ‘Practitioner psychologist’ at the end of your 3-year doctoral course.

As part of this role, you will be required to travel to settings out in the community, therefore, a full and valid driving licence is desirable but not essential.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance in spoken English to CEFR level C2. This requirement is in accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 (Fluency Duty).

City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. Any offer of employment will be subject to receipt of a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.

The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.
