Job description

Oxfam Bookshop Maidstone has recently increased its opening hours, and to support this we are now looking to expand our friendly team with a Trainee Lead Volunteer who will look after the shop on Sundays.

In addition to helping with day-to-day activities (e.g. sorting and pricing stock, till work), Lead Volunteers have responsibility for running the shop. Duties include:

  • Opening and closing
  • Maintaining Health and Safety standards
  • Acting as the Appointed Person for handling emergencies
  • Supervision of Under 18s (Young Volunteers)
  • Oversight of financial activities including Cash Up

While in the 'Trainee Lead Volunteer' role, the successful applicant would ideally be able to attend the shop on days other than Sunday to facilitate training, for a period of approximately 1-2 months; this will be discussed during the application process.

Upon promotion to the full 'Lead Volunteer' role, they will then be expected to regularly attend the shop on Sundays for a period of up to 5 hours (11am-3pm opening time, plus opening and closing procedures).

The successful applicant will also be asked to undergo a DBS check, at no cost to themself.

About the Role

Our specialist bookshops are part of what makes Oxfam totally unique. We have the largest chain of second-hand bookshops in Europe and sell 22 million books annually. We’ll share our expertise with you and give you all the training and support you need to help us make the most of our wonderful donated books. Whether you have years of experience or are totally new to retail, you will be part of a fantastic community of booksellers.

We will give you all the training and support you need so you will develop your skills as part of our team. You don’t need to have any experience – we’ve got you covered. You can also get some lunch and travel costs too. Whatever you need, we’re here to help.

Please note that this is a volunteer role, not a paid role, and due to the responsibilities it involves, we will not accept applications from Under 18s.

How to Apply

To apply, you will need to complete the application form on Oxfam's Volunteering portal, which requires a valid reference, and attend an initial chat with the shop manager, where you must provide proof of ID.

The application form for this role can be found here: https://volunteering.oxfam.org.uk/opportunities/60742-trainee-lead-volunteer-sundays-maidstone-bookshop-2024-02-16

If you need help completing the form, we can assist with this in the shop; call us on 01622 753585 to arrange an appointment.

Whether you are charity-minded and passionate about furthering Oxfam's cause, absolutely barmy about books or looking to add skills and experience to your CV, we can't wait to hear from you!
